Martin Clement Creamer (born 1948), is a South African mining journalist..[1] focusing on in-depth reporting on the South African mining industry. He is the publishing editor and chief mining commentator at Mining Weekly and Engineering News.

Creamer specializes in the mining industry in South Africa as well as internationally. He deals with several major mining companies including Anglo American[2], Anglo Platinum[3], Anglo Gold Ashanti[4], Gold Fields[5], BHP Billiton[6] and others.

Education

Creamer was educated at Christian Brothers College[7], a Roman Catholic private school located in the town of Boksburg in Gauteng, South Africa. He was head prefect in 1965[8] and matriculated with the subjects of English, Afrikaans, Latin, Mathematics, Science and Botany.

Career

In 1966 to 1967, Creamer performed his compulsory military training and ranked Second Lieutenant Second Lieutenant in the 1 Parachute Battalion Corp. His first job was as a technician trainee technician in mechanical engineering at First Electric Corporation of South Africa Limited starting in 1966 till 1967.

In 1968, Creamer began his journalist career at the Benoni City Times[9] as a Sports reporter. He then joined the daily newspaper, The Star[10], as a Johannesburg News reporter; and was the first journalist investigator of The Starline. He also worked for the Eastern Province Herald[11], as the Port Elizabeth news and municipal reporter, and later that year was appointed the sub editor.

Creamer then moved on to the Sunday Times[12], known as South Africa's biggest Sunday newspaper[13] and established in 1906. At only 23 years old, he was the youngest known deputy news editor in South Africa. He was the editor in charge of writing about The Information Scandal[14] a South African political scandal that involved the Department of Information, and which ultimately played a key role in influencing South Africa’s democratisation[15]

In 1981, Creamer became sole proprietor of Engineering News, a weekly industrial magazine that is published every Friday. Creamer went on to found Mining Weekly in 1995. The publications currently have a readership of 98 607 and 109 075 , respectively, as well as online readerships[16]

Awards and recognition

Martin Creamer has been awarded numerous journalism awards and possesses more than 50 years of journalistic experience.

Creamer was awarded the prestigious but now defunct SFW Award for investigative journalism. At the time, the SFW Awards were the journalism equivalent to South Africa’s Pulitzer Prize. He was also awarded the Siemens award for journalistic excellence. His publications Engineering News and Mining Weekly have won more than 20 Specialist Press/Magazine Publishers’ Association awards[17].

Extramural

Founder member of the Edenvale-Tembisa Justice and Peace Group[18], launched to promote justice, peace and unity among the people of the area. The group, made up of mainly Tembisans and Edenvalers, is one of the most active promoters of justice and peace in South Africa.[19]
