Mary Devlin was a nineteenth century actress who was married to Edwin Booth. Early LifeMary Devlin was born on May 19, 1840 in Troy, New York. She was the daughter of a merchant.[1][2] CareerMary Devlin was an actress who was also trained in music. She made her New York debut as the Juliet to Charlotte Cushman’s Romeo on June 21, 1959 at Niblo’s Garden. In The Letters and Notebooks of Mary Devlin Booth, published in 1987, she detailed her passion for her career amongst many other musings.[2][1] Personal LifeMary Devlin met fellow actor Edwin Booth in Richmond, Virginia in 1856. They later married on July 7, 1860. She retired from the stage per his request. Together they had a daughter, Edwina Marie Frances Booth, who was born on December 9, 1861 in London, England during one of Edwin’s stage tours. Edwina published a book about her father in 1894 entitled Edwin Booth: Recollections by His Daughter, Edwina Booth Grossmann, and Letter to Her and to His Friends, which included a section entitled “My Mother” under a chapter entitled “Recollections of My Father”.[2][3][4][5] DeathMary Devlin Booth died of pneumonia on February 21, 1863 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Edwin was in Boston when she died, too drunk to answer the telegrams which stated her condition and urged his prompt return. She is buried at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The inscription on the back of her grave is the first two stanzas of Thomas Williams Parson's “Her Epitaph”, “The handful here, that once was Mary’s earth, Held, while it breathed, so beautiful a soul, That, when she died, all recognized her birth, And had their sorrow in serene control. “Not here! not here! to every mourners heart The wintry wind seemed whispering round her bier; Ans when the tomb-doer opened with a start, We heard it echoed from within, -“Not here!”.
