María del Socorro González Elizondo (August 17 1953 (65 años) is a Mexican botanist, taxonomist, and professor .1 She is a stand out specialist on Neotropical flora, and the taxonomy of cyperaceae in the genus of Eleocharis, having identified approximately 50 species and varieties of diverse taxonomical groups. Born in San Buenaventura, Coahuila, Mexico to Maria del Socorro Garcia Gonzalez and Humberto Flores. She is the oldest of five siblings. She is now married to Federico Castaneda and has a daughter, Ana Cecilia, and son, Juan Jorge. In 1976, she got her title in Biology at College of Biological Sciences, University Autonomous of Nuevo Leon, with the thesis “The toxic plants have won in Bustamante, Villaldama and Orange wood, N.L”. In 1982 she got her doctorate in science, specialized in Systematic Botany(1979-1980), at the National School of Biological Sciences, at the National Polytechnic Institute, defending her thesis “The familia Cerperaceae in the Valley of Mexico”. She is a researcher holder "C" in the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Regional Integral Development (CIIDIR) Durango Unit, National Polytechnic Institute.
