Max Bruinsma (born 1962) is a Dutch design critic, editor, curator, and educator.

Education

After working as an apprentice and assistant for 4 years at Drukkerij De Regenboog printers in Groningen, NL, in 1982 Bruinsma received his degree in the History of Art, Architecture and Design from Groningen University. Bruinsma received his masters in the History of Art from the University of Amsterdam in 1985.

Career

Bruinsma worked as Editor-in-Chief of the Dutch design magazine "Items" from 1988-89, and Senior editor from 1992-97. He then was Editor of Eye_(magazine), a London-based international graphic design quarterly, from 1997–99. He returned as Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of "Items" from 2009-13. Bruinsma has contributed to many other design publications like ID, Blueprint, The AIGA Journal, Étappes, and Form, published “Deep Sites: Classic Principles of Cutting-Edge Web Design” with Thames & Hudson in 2003 and has been the Editor of several books.

The Pierre Bayle Prize for design criticism was awarded to Bruinsma in 2005.[1]

He was curator of "Catalysts! The cultural force of communication design exhibition" as part of Lisbon design biennial "ExperimentaDesign 2005" and later co-curated (with Hans Maier-Aichen) an exhibition titled "Useless?" for "ExperimentaDesign 2011"[2].

Bruinsma worked as a Visiting Professor in Editorial Design at the Graduate School of Art and Design, Utrecht in 20015. From 2013-15 he was course director of the Editorial Design Masters at HKU Utrecht School of the Arts. Currently, Bruinsma is the Core Tutor of E-cultures and Transmedia Narratives at the Lucerne School of Art and Design and a Core Tutor and Thesis Advisor for MIARD at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam[3]
