Max Fridman

Max Fridman is a fictional character and the main protagonist of comic book series, Entitled Max Fridman’s adventures, created in 1982 by Vittorio Giardino, and taking place in Europe at the end of the 1930s.

Character

Max Fridman is an ex-agent of French counterespionage, living in Geneva with his ex-wife Ada and his daughter Esther, and who is asked to take up his old job again. He is attractive, intelligent and well-read, his figure refined and elegant, working in a discreet and effective way and under the cover of a prosperous tobacco merchant. He is always well-dressed and frequently wears a fedora hat which covers his red hair. He is Jewish, with a carefully-groomed beard and a pipe. He has a close relationship to his daughter.

The series

Max Fridman’s adventures brings into play conflicts between secret agents from different European countries just before of the Second World War. The stories offer good opportunities to travel across Europe: Hungary, Turkey, Spain… all the while discovering characters who are often complex: There are spies, diplomats, henchmen… Women also appear, which makes it possible to bring a touch of romance and to appreciate Max Fridman’s gallantry and his thoughtfulness.

According to Vittorio giadino, it is the Yugoslavian conflict which triggered his desire to plunge Max Fridman into the Spanish tragedy: “Before I had time to finish this story([https://www.goodreads.com/series/97752-jonas-fink Jonas Fink]), another major event happened.: The siege of Sarajevo, and more generally, the civil war which crippled Yugoslavia. It reminded me of another siege, perhaps even more bloody, which was the one of Madrid. I felt myself compelled to bring up this subject.”

The following books of the series could broach on the subject of Italy under Mussolini, the first six months of the Second World War in France, the Netherlands under Nazi occupation, the Liberation of Bologna, hometown to the artist, or even, the foundation of the state of Israel.
