M. E. CHERIAN

Mathai Easow Cherian (1917 - October 2, 1993) popularly known as Kochu (little) Sir was one of the first missionaries from Kerala, India. From being a primary school teacher, he became one of the greatest missionary in India through his preaching and never ending love for music. He became one of the most ifluential and innovative personalities among the brethren believers. Cherian has written and composed over 250 songs in Malayalam including Geetham geetham, seon sanchari njan, En sankadangal sakalavum, Anugrahathin adipathiye, En Yeshuve En Jeevane. He also founded Young men's evangelical fellowship (Y.M.E.F), Suviseshakan magazine, SBS Camps and Madurai Bible School.

Early life

Cherian who was called as Podiyan was the oldest out of the eight children born to Evg. T. M. Easow (Kunjachan upadheshi) and Eliyamma on 1917. Cherian's primary education was in Kattelpurath Primary School. After he passed 4th grade, he joined Pullad Malayalam Medium School for 5th grade. Due to the financial status he was asked to join the teacher's training for primary school when he was 12 years old. His father wanted him to become a school teacher while his mother wanted him to persuade higher studies. He then went on to persuade his higher studies in Tiruvalla and came home to Kurianoor every weekened by foot. After his high school graduation at the age of 15, Cherian joined N.M.U.P School in Kangazha as a teacher. Later he was transferred to Noel Memorial High School in Kumbanad. Due to the lack of public transportation he used to walk to the school daily from his home.

Family

Since the family faced many financial problems, proposals from brethren denomination were getting rejected for Kochu sir. In this situation a proposal came from a Marthoma denomination for Cherian. When Cherian met this young girl Mariamma who was then studying for her majors in Malayalam, asked if she liked him because he was a teacher. Cherian shared his passion for God's work to Mariyamma and asked if she will be willing to live as a missionairy's wife if God calls him. She agreed to Cherian and decided to get married. The wedding was then solemnized by missionary E. H. Noel.

The couple had five sons and three daughters. Grace Cherian, m. to Evg. K. V. Samuel in Secundrabad; James Cherian, runs the suviseshakan magazine started by Cherian; Mercy Cherian, m. to Late Evg. T. U. Cherian in Jodhpur; Late Joice Cherian, m. to Evg Mathew Paul; Jones Cherian, runs the Madurai Bible School along with his sons Sam Jones Cherian and Shiju Jones Cherian; Titus Cherian; Late Thomas Cherian and Jose Cherian.

Ministry Career

At the age of 9, Cherian accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior. The very first book Cherian finished reading was the Holy Bible. From the time he accepted Christ into his life, it was his passion to be an evangelist. He used to conduct prayer groups as a school student. Following his father's foot steps who was an evangelist he continued to accompany for the Lord's work and special meetings. He was never ashamed of sharing testimonies and thoughts from the Bible to the public. He ministered in different ways by becoming a Sunday School teacher. Even though he wanted to become a teacher, his ultimate passion was to surrender to the Lord's work. While he was teaching at the M.N.U.P School, he had the desire to be an evangelist. He then resigned his teaching career and decided to do the Lord's ministry. Joy filled Kochu sir's heart as he was walking towards home to share this news to his family but as he reached home, the joy decreased and he confirmed in his prayers that he will not turn for the Lord's work until or unless God pushes him for the work. After this incident he worked as a school teacher for 7 years. During that period again a passion towards evangelism came in Cherian's heart and as a result he founded the Young men's evangelical fellowship (Y.M.E.F).

On October, 1943, Kumbanad Convention was being held and Cherian was sitting in the first row. Mahakavi (The great poet), K. V. Simon was taking the sermon. He was preaching on the topic that youths must be useful and is a must need to do the work of the Lord. At that moment, Simon turned towards Cherian and said, If this Kochu sir would go for this great mission, wont the Lord fulfill all his needs? All his doubts were cleared at that point of time and he was assured of his calling for the Lord's work. He then gave a resignation letter to the School's management without even asking his spouse.

His earnest desire was to serve the Lord among the people of Tamil Nadu in the Temple city, Madurai. This was the biggest challenge taken by Cherian as he resigned during a period where World war II was occurring and people had no jobs and was struggling to live and his entire family was depended on him. However Cherian's burden was for the whole Tamil Nadu to teach the word of God and to encourage the believers and start brethren churches in those regions. As a result in the year 1955, he started the Madurai Bible School.

M. E. C. arrived at Madurai after two weeks of resignation accompanied by Evg K. J. Kurien and Punulur Kochu Mathaichan. This small group who came from the villages in Kerala felt that Madurai was a big city filled with monuments and temples. The young men who came from Kerala stayed in a very small rented room and started the ministries at the near by streets in Madurai. Public sermons and track distributions were the main ministries done by Cherian and his co workers at that time.

The believers in Madurai wanted a hall to worship and a Marthomite friend gave their house to gather on Sundays. This was the first Sunday gathering for Cherian in Madurai. The believers who gathered during the service were P. A. Chacko, K. J. Kurien, M. E. Cherian, C. K. John, Kochu Mathai, P. K. Mathews, Ben thomas and Samuel Maduram along with an unknown visitor.

Cherian then rented a house for 40 rupees and asked his wife to join him for the ministries. She then came along with her father in law T. M. Easow and Cherian's father prayed for both of them and returned back home. He had set an example to many evangelists who work today in many parts of the world.

Cherian's messages were simple and popular appealing as he gave his body, soul and mind while preaching. He spoke with a thirst to win souls for Christ. As a result, his ministries became a great blessing as hundreds and thousands of people came forward from the south India and spread across the Tamil Nadu and Kerala regions. His preaching not only influenced the lives of India but also around the world especially in the Gulf states and U.S.A. His songs are sung till date and is refreshing to many souls of today's era. Cherian used to play an accordion and most of the times he composed the songs while playing his instrument.

Awards

M. E. Cherian was awarded the Mahakavi K. V. Simon award when he was 75 years old.

Later life and death

On July 4, 1993, while speaking to the public in New York, he mentioned his days were numbered and his desire is to go back to Madurai and wait for his heavenly calling. This was one of his last ministries he had finished on this earth.

On October 2, 1993, Cherian went to a believer's house to prepare a message to preach in a local church and as he was preparing he collapsed. He was promoted to glory and the sisters in the house testified that his face was shone like an angel just before he passed away.
