Meirek people also spelled as Miriek or Miraik is the original native people that has been living in what is known today a city in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, a city bordering Brunei to the east. They would prefer to be called as Jatti Meirek.[1]

Origin

They are believed to be one of the groups of Orang Ulu under the Kayan sub-tribe that was believed to flee from the endless tribal wars especially the threats from the barbaric Kayan tribe expansion downriver of Likouh Miraik and forces Meirek people to settle around the coastal area to the northern parts of Borneo. They can be found in Miri, Pujut, Bakam, Lopeng, Lutong, Bekenu, Kuala Baram, Sibuti, Niah, Bakong, and Marudi in East Malaysia state of Sarawak while Tutong, Temburong, and Kuala Belait in Brunei.

Demographic

The number of Meirek population as of 2016 are numbered about 10,000, with the majority living in northern Sarawak and Brunei.[2]They are politically identified as Malays and Islam as their religion which is believed to be introduced by the Bruneian tribe of Kedayan after their arrival to the Meirek's settlements along the coast.[3][4] Meirek people that move to Sibuti are known to intermarried with other ethnic native minorities called Bakong (Bahaong/Bakung) and Dalik (Dallieh/Dalek/Dali) that has been living around Bekenu, Kampung Rambai and Kampung Kayu Kapur. The major association of Meirek people community is Miri Jatti Meirek Association (Persatuan Jatti Meirek Miri)[5][6] and the combined entities of minority Bakong, Dalek and Meirek community group is Bakong Dalek and Meirek Association (Persatuan Bakong Dalik dan Meirek) or BADAMI.[7][8][9][https://www.facebook.com/persatuanbadami.sarawak]

Conservation

Meirek language also known as Tuttot Meirek spoken by Meirek people are an endangered language.[10] The use of the language is decreasing because of intermarriage to other major ethnicities, less modern vocabulary usage and the preference of the youth to speak in modern language such as Sarawak Malay, Kedayan, Malay and English.[2][11]It is estimated that fewer than 5000 active speakers of the language are known to converse in the language on a daily basis.[2]The Jatti Meirek is also facing loss of inherited ancestral land and their ownership because the land status of Native Customary Rights (NCR) was converted into state land status without their knowledge in Pujut area, Miri by the Government of Sarawak in the 80s. These lands are given to developers and plantation companies to be developed into shop lots, housings and palm oil plantations.[12][13] There are efforts to document Tuttot Meirek properly into a dictionary and guidebook, where the pioneering of such effort is the one and only "A Guide to the Meirek Language" (Panduan Bercakap Bahasa Jatti Meirek)[14][15] that is currently in the editorial process for a second edition in a joint efforts by Jatti Meirek Association of Miri, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).[16][1]
