Born in 1878, Mendog became an officer in the German East Africa Company. He participated in the suppression of the Maji Maji Rebellion (1905 - 1907). By 1914, he had reached the rank of Hauptmann and fought on the Eastern Front during World War I. After the war, he returned to Germany and worked as a geography school teacher.

World War II

During the Nazi era Mendog was commissioned as an Oberst and given command of the Landesschützen-Regiment 26 on the 6th of June 1940, when it was created in Stettin. The regiment was stationed in the Nazi Occupied Netherlands where it suppressed resistance forces. By 1944, Mendog had been stationed on the Western Front defending against the Allied invasion of France in Operation Overlord. During the last month of Operation Overlord, when the Wehrmacht had mostly withdrawn from Metropolitan France, he was killed during an Allied bombing raid.
