Mendog Freiherr von Greifen (4th May 1878 - 26th Aug 1944) was a high-ranking officer in the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II. He was the commanding officer of the Landesschützen-Regiment 26 and participated in the occupation of the Netherlands. He participated in the suppression of the Maji Maji Rebellion (1905 - 1907). By 1914, he had reached the rank of Hauptmann and fought on the Eastern Front during World War I. After the war, he returned to Germany and worked as a geography school teacher. World War IIDuring the Nazi era Mendog was commissioned as an Oberst and given command of the Landesschützen-Regiment 26 on the 6th of June 1940, when it was created in Stettin. The regiment was stationed in the Nazi Occupied Netherlands where it suppressed resistance forces. By 1944, Mendog had been stationed on the Western Front defending against the Allied invasion of France in Operation Overlord. During the last month of Operation Overlord, when the Wehrmacht had mostly withdrawn from Metropolitan France, he was killed during an Allied bombing raid. ReferencesBibliography
