She was a journalist with the Kamloops Daily Sentinel, first starting out in accounts and national advertising, eventually becoming women's editor and then being placed in charge of city news in 1958.[2] She retired from newspaper work in 1975.[3] Matthews was elected to city council for the first of three terms in 1972, only the second woman to sit in the local chamber.[3] In 1987, she was the first women to be given the honour Freedom of the City, the highest honour a municipality can bestow.[4] An avid gardener, especially of roses, she was a founding member of the Kamloops Garden Club. She donated some of her roses to the city, which became the base of the rose garden in Riverside Park, now named after another local politician, Peter Wing.[5] In 2012, the Kamloops Garden Club unveiled a hybridized rose named in honour of Matthews.[6] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.inmemoriam.ca/view-announcement-210577-meryl-beatrice-matthews.html|title=MERYL BEATRICE MATTHEWS: obituary and death notice on InMemoriam|website=www.inmemoriam.ca|language=en|access-date=2018-10-13}} 2. ^"Appointments to Editorial Staff," Kamloops Daily Sentinel, September 18, 1953, p.3. 3. ^1 "Retirement marks end of long political career," Kamloops News, December 6, 1986. 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.kamloops.ca/our-community/community-awards/freedom-city|title=Freedom of the City|date=2017-02-06|work=City of Kamloops|access-date=2018-10-13|language=en}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/flags-lowered-for-meryl-matthews-1.1216608|title=Flags lowered for Meryl Matthews|last=HEWLETT|first=JASON|work=Kamloops Daily News|access-date=2018-10-13}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/the-meryl-matthews-rose-1.1243329|title=The Meryl Matthews Rose|work=Kamloops Daily News|access-date=2018-10-13}} |
