MeToo in China (#MeToo, Me Too, #米兔,#俺也是,or #WoYeShi) is a social movement in China that started in January 2018. In 2018, there were #MeToo cases in Chinese academia, civil society and NGOs, the entertainment industry, and in organized religions.

According to journalist Qin Liwen, the Chinese #MeToo movement have at least three characteristics that distinguish it from previous public debates on sexual assault or sexual harassment cases in China. First, it is a grassroots movement with large-scale participation, including a large number of anonymous survivors who have come forward. Second, the movement has received widespread attention and support, including from netizens, intellectuals, journalists and others; it has also utilized new forms of communication, including the use of Blockchain technology. Third, the movement has led to in-depth discussions of gender and power in China. It was no longer limited to accusation of individual men. Instead, it has advanced to include the critique of the general patriarchal power structure in China, as well as reflections of the movement and its development.[1]

Beginning of Movement

On Jan. 1, 2018, Luo Xixi, a software engineer and an alumnae of Beihang University published a first-person account of her PhD advisor Chen Xiaowu’s alleged sexual harassment. Luo's accounts went viral on Chinese Internet. Beihang immediately suspended Chen and announced an investigation. Luo's coming forward launched the #MeToo movement in China.
