Michael Clayton McCarthy (Born February 2nd, 1959) is an American screen and television writer, most known for his work on Saturday Night Live, Sesame Street, The Drew Carey Show, Mike and Molly, and many Comedy Central projects.[1] After working for Saturday Night Live at age 24, Michael went into acting, working as a writer and improvisor for The Second City.[2] He is currently married to fellow improvisor Susan Messing,[3] and teaches classes on television writing at The Annoyance, io Chicago, and DePaul University. Early LifeMichael was born in Cleveland Ohio, and his family moved nine times, once internationally, by the time of his high school graduation. He graduated Cum Laude from Ohio University, majoring in Communications. At age 19, he attended his first Second City show, Freud Slipped Here, and during his senior year of college, he was accepted to the very first internship position offered by The Second City. WritingAfter studying under Del Close, Paul Sills, and Bernie Sahlins, Michael moved to New York City to write for Saturday Night Live at age 24. His season received an Emmy nomination for writing. [4] Not long after, Michael worked as a writer for Sesame Street for two years. Michael moved back to Chicago to work as an improvisor and writer at The Second City, performing in two shows in the E.T.C. Theater and three on The Second City Mainstage.[5] He performed alongside Steve Carell, Amy Sedaris, and Paul Dinello. After moving to LA to pursue writing and acting, Michael worked as a writer on "The Drew Carey Show," "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", and "Mike and Molly". He additionally created a TV series called "Beyond The Pale," and founded Ireland's first comedy festival called The Cat Laughs in Kilkenny, Ireland (still running to this day).[6] ActingMichael started acting after moving to LA, and has acted in such television roles as "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Cold Case," "The Gilmore Girls," and "Freaks and Geeks" and movie roles in "Groundhog Day," "The Late Shift" and "The Informant." [7] He starred in "Big News TV", a news-driven sketch comedy show that he had also produced and written. TeachingMichael started the writing program for The Second City in 1992, and later founded the television writing curriculum "The Comedy Lab" at The iO West Theater and iO Chicago Theater. He taught at iO for 15 years, four classes at a time, later additionally teaching at The Annoyance and DePaul University as an adjunct professor. He resides in Chicago with his wife Susan Messing teaching at these three institutions.
