Michael Vincent Marrale (born February 9, 1974), is an American business executive, Forbes contributor[1], and a leader in the financial technology and data-driven investment research spaces. An early proponent of using data and quantitative information in the investment research process,[2] Marrale has led some of the most well-known and respected equity research divisions around the globe that incorporate the use of alternative data into their processes.[3][4] He currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of M Science.[5]

Early Life and Education

Marrale attended Binghamton University School of Management where he received a B.S. in Accounting.[3][6]

Career

Marrale started his career in finance at Lehman Brothers and Prudential Securities.[6] He held numerous positions before moving to RBC Capital Markets in 2002, joining as a middle-market specialist to help the firm better service hedge funds and small to mid-sized institutional clients.[7] From 2002 to 2012, he held a variety of roles at RBC, including Director of Equity Sales, Head of Sector Strategy, Head of Technology Trading and Market Structure, Portfolio Manager, and Head of Sales Trading.[6]

Marrale went on to work at Investment Technology Group, Inc (ITG) in 2012, where he was a driving force in successfully leading the firm’s data-driven research and trading functions as Head of Research, Sales & Trading,[8] which was known globally as one of the most highly respected and recognized divisions of its kind during that time.[3] During Marrale’s tenure at ITG, he played a major role in the 2015 divestiture and sale of its Energy research business, which was bought by Warburg Pincus for over $120 million.[9] He credits the time he spent at ITG as transformative, discovering the edge in quantitative and data-driven information for investment research.[10]

In 2016, Leucadia National Corporation announced its acquisition of ITG Investment Research, LLC,[11] and it was rebranded as M Science, with Marrale appointed as CEO where he also currently serves on the board.[12]

With its focus on the consumer, telecommunications, and industrial verticals, M Science has been expanding its sector coverage and alternative data solutions across the U.S., China, and Europe under Marrale’s direction.[13] He has also been instrumental in attracting institutional investors and the hedge fund community to alternative data as a means to generate alpha in financial markets,[10] and has helped grow M Science’s customer base to over 100 discretionary asset managers.[14] [15] In 2018, with Marrale at the helm, M Science acquired TickerTags, a company with a unique mention frequency tool that analyzes conversational data to detect market trends.[16] [17]

Personal Life

Marrale resides on Long Island, New York. In his free time, he enjoys boating, skiing, and spending time with his three children.[10]

He currently serves as on the Board of Associates the Ronald McDonald House of New York[33] and is a member of Young Presidents’ Association.[34][5] Marrale has previously served as Trustee and Treasurer for The Nature Conservancy on Long Island,[35] [3] as well as a former advisory board member at Cians Analytics Inc.[36][37]
