Michael Starnes is a former chairman of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce and a philanthropist. He is the founder of the transportation company MS Carriers and is a current significant benefactor for Ole Miss.[1]. The Ole MIss athletic training facility, located just north of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, is named for him[2]. Mike is a close friend of former Ole Miss president and football great Robert Khayat. Michael Starnes was born ca. 1946 in Oxford, MS to Gladys and Milton Starnes. As a child, he helped out with deliveries for Milton Starnes's trucking company.[3] After obtaining his degree from Ole Miss in 1968, Starnes went on to found M.S. Carriers, a Memphis-based trucking company. Begun with only $10,000, the company became the fifth largest truckload company in the nation, boasting 5,000 trucks and 6,000 employees.
