The Mid Penn Conference (MPC) is a High School athletic conference that directs and organizes interscholastic athletic competitions, conducts tournaments, establishes athletic guidelines, divisional alignments and prescribed eligibility rules for student-athletes.

History

For the 1982-1983 school year, the Mid Penn Conference began operations. Twenty-seven schools from 4 athletic leagues (Blue Mountain, Capital Area, South Central, and Tri-Valley) and 7 counties in the PIAA District III (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon, Perry, and York.) These schools included: Big Spring, Bishop McDevitt, Boiling Springs, Camp Hill, Carlisle, Cedar Cliff, Central Dauphin, Central Dauphin East, Chambersburg, Cumberland Valley, Delone Catholic, East Pennsboro, Harrisburg, Hershey, Lower Dauphin, Mechanicsburg, Middletown, Milton Hershey, Northern York, Palmyra, Red Land, Shippensburg, Steelton-Highspire, Susquehanna Township, Susquenita, Trinity, and West Perry. At it's inception, the MPC became the largest athletic conference in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. [1]

Divisions

The MPC divides its member schools' into 4 geographical districts for the purpose of state championship competition. These divisions are the Commonwealth, Colonial, Capital, and Keystone divisions.

Alignments

High School team alignments are created on a per-sport basis and conducts realignment proceedings every two years. In 2016, the MPC aligned it's teams in anticipation for expanding classes. Changes include increasing the sports of baseball,softball, basketball and football from 4 to 6 divisions and increasing cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and volleyball by 1 division. This move signaled the end of the Blue Mountain League.

2004

Altoona, Hollidaysburg, State College (Football Only)

In 2004, the Mid-Penn admitted four schools from District 6 to be charter members for football only. These schools were Altoona, Central Mountain, Hollidaysburg, and State College. Central Mountain Left the conference before ever participating in the Mid-Penn conference after being dropped in classification from AAAA to AAA[4]

2012

Mifflin County, State College (All Sports)

In November 2010, State College approached the Mid-Penn about becoming a member in all sports for both High School and Middle School teams. This request was tabled due to issues regarding travel for Middle School students. In early 2011 after another letter asking to be a member for varsity only, State College was admitted into the Mid-Penn.[4]

In 2011, the Mifflin County School Board voted to merge Indian Valley and Lewistown High Schools.[5] In 2012, Mifflin County School District was admitted into the Mid Penn Conference.[1]

Scotland

The Scotland School for Veterans was closed in 2009 after Governor Rendell eliminated the school's state funding.[6]

2010

Altoona

After the 2008 season, Altoona applied for membership in the WPIAL. In 2009, the school informed the Mid-Penn that 2009 would be their final season in the conference.[4]

2014

Gettysburg

In early 2013, Gettysburg High School's school board passed a motion to switch from the Mid Penn Conference to the York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA.) This vote was attempted on two other occasions and failed. The reason cited for the move was the cost of transportation.[7]

2017

James Buchanan (Football Only)

On November 2, 2016 James Buchanan's Athletic Director and Principle requested that James Buchanan be withdrawn from the conference football schedule. They would move to an independent schedule after issues related to low student athletes and consistent losses.[8]
