Milky Way Gas Station is a Dutch progressive rock band. Central figure is multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Rob IJpelaan. The debut album Somewhere/Anywhere from 2017, with contributions of Opeth keyboard player Joakim Svalberg, was very well received.

Milky Way Gas Station was founded in 2010. Drummer Harald Veenker, bass player Jeroen Vriend and guitarist Rob de Jong made their way with Kramer, an Amsterdam progrock band that performed in venues such as Paradiso in Amsterdam and also gave concerts in Germany, England and Lithuania. In 2010 they met Rob IJpelaan. He appeared to have a predilection for odd time signatures and long drawn-out compositions. That appealed to Veenker, Vriend and De Jong.

When Rob de Jong, the brother of singer/songwriter Erik 'Spinvis' de Jong, emigrated to the United States in 2012, the others invited guitarist Niels Hoppe to join the band. Hoppe studied guitar at the academy of music in Alkmaar and was a three-times finalist of the Grand Prix of Music of the Netherlands, with Q65, Vera Lynn and Corey. With Corey he won the prize in 2002.

The very perfectionist Milky Way Gas Station worked for five years on Somewhere/Anywhere. Joakim Svalberg, keyboard player of the Swedish progmetalband Opeth, came into contact with Veenker, heard the demo and was enthusiastic. He asked if he could contribute some keyboards, and was very welcome to do so. The renowned Dutch keyboard player Jan-Peter Bast (The Scene, Het Goede Doel) also plays on the album. Bast, a teacher at the academy of music in Haarlem, is now officially a member of Milky Way Gas Station.

Somewhere/Anywere - co-produced by Maarten Tap - was well received by the website Progwereld. That spoke of a 'beautiful album with 73 minutes of fascinating music', with 'peerless' solos by Bast. Magazine Rock Affairs praised the input of guest singer Lana Wolf in the song 37 Part II and wrote: 'The individual qualities in combination with the input of a number of big names makes this an album of great class.'

Since December 2018 [https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudewijn_Geels Boudewijn Geels] is the bassplayer of Milky Way Gas Station. He previously played in the Amsterdam metal band Vexation, and together with Dutch singer/actor Jeroen van Koningsbrugge in The Black Daniels, the forerunner of stonerrock band Zeus.
