MiMKinetic Derby

The MiMKinetic Derby is an annual human-powered art sculpture derby that was first held on the unusually cold 48 degree Saturday morning of February 27th, 2016 in Gainesville Florida.

Organizers devised the event after four years of entering art bikes in the University of Florida Homecoming Parade:[1]. With awards like "Second Most Mediocre - Because you can't call out the worst", the event is quickly becoming the spring alternative to the homecoming parade and is held annually the last weekend in February.

History

The initial idea came from research and discussions between founding participants and organizers Raymond Rawls and Joseph Floyd. The pair had searched for other art bike creators and events finding kinetic sculpture races. They were inspired by the dream of competing in other events across the nation, however realizing that the closest event was 850 miles away in Baltimore the duo recognized that most of their community would never be able to share their experience. So with the help of Active Streets Alliance's (ASA) board they set about creating an event of Alachua County's very own.

ASA Board president Fae Nageon de Lestang was tasked with creating the event's name. Given her singer/song writer background, she quickly bestowed the event with the name Menagerie in Motion Kinetic Derby. She is said to have thought back to the [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAPoYPlqnD0 amazing bike creatures] that rode along the homecoming parade accompanied by Flat Land the band she and her husband headlined at the time. The name was shorted in late 2018 to MiMKinetic for both brevity and to eliminate the frequent issues created by misspellings of the word menagerie though kinetic seems surprisingly troublesome for bad spellers too.

None of this might have transpired had board member Lorraine Duerden not attended the homecoming parade in 2011 and been disappointed by both the small number of artistic entries and the large number of gas powered vehicular entries. This led to the first art bike entry "The Killer Koi"[2] in 2012 that eventually spurred MiMKinetic.

Lastly it is worth noting that though the event is held in the center of Alachua County (Gainesville), the city's Cultural Affairs Department politely declined funding the untested event. The Alachua County Commission voted to makeup the first year shortfall in sponsorships and along with the generous donation of overnight storage by the Gainesville CRA and GRU the event proved its cultural and artistic value to the city's residents.

Judges & Officials

The slate of judges and officials have evolved overtime, though a few constants have remained. The current composition is compromised of[3]

Honorary Planning Chair

The Chair of the Alachua County Commission shall preside over the event and fill in should any judge become unavailable or be to tenderhearted to vote on awards like Second Most Mediocre or Most Audacious Breakdown.

Lead Judge

The Mayor of the City of Gainesville serves as the head judge and retains the right to pronounce new and additional awards and honors during the event. The current mayor has used his power generously.

Art Judge

A member of the Arts & Cultural community serves to ensure that all entries are acknowledged for their unique qualities and intrinsic beauty.

Education Judge

The Chair of the Alachua County School Board helps judge annually. They always seem to favor the young and the young at heart.

Business Community Judge

The Greater Gainesville Chamber provides one judge to evaluate the talent and ingenuity of contestants.

Engineering Judge

A judge from the community with a degree in mechanical engineering. Seriously we need someone to make sure the kids are not cheating. The small ones are sneaky.

Other Aspects of Note

Participants

Overtime participation from Captain and Crews has increased from primarily Gainesville based to include teams from:

  • Jacksonville
  • Ocala
  • Orlando
  • Geneva Florida

Quadricycle Kit for Kids

In the Summer of 2016, Joseph Floyd and the Active Streets Alliance began working in earnest with Master Builder Camp, a STEAM Summer Camp, to make the event more inclusive of children. Based in part on feedback from the camp in 2016-17 as well as from other participants like artist and mother Jenn Garrett, work began on an entirely new design constructed largely with Maker Pipe connectors to breakdown for storage in the "off season".

With assistance and input from local makers, those efforts have resulted in a prototype four seat quadricycle kit being tested in the 2018 derby. During their winter camp, Master Builder Camp will test the refined kit with campers for entry in the 2019 MiMKinetic Derby and begin developing curriculum for the kit. The long term goal is to make a highly educational and reusable base that allows teachers and students to place temporary overlays on.

Archival Documentation
