Marco Lupis Macedonio Palermo di Santa Margherita (Rome, Italy, 1960), is an Italian journalist and photojournalist, historian and genealogist. It is internationally known due to its exclusive coverage of the 2001 SARS epidemic and its articles on SARS conspiracy theory, published in major international newspapers, like El Pais in Spain, El Clarin in Argentina and in the Washington Post in the US.[1].

He was the first Italian journalist to interview the Sub-Comandante Marcos in the Mexican jungle of Chiapas [2], in 1993.

His parents were Lupis Macedonio Palermo of Princes of Santa Margherita, the Marquis don Giovanni IV, and the 12th Duchess of San Donato, donna Marina Lèbano Pacelli del Mercato di Leo Sanseverino. In 2003, after his mother's death, he became the 13th Duke of San Donato. His family intermarried with the British Royal Family due of the marriage of her cousin, Dona Paola Doimi de Lupis with Lord Nicholas Windsor, elder son of HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent[3].

He began a career in journalism after a university degree in Modern Literature, specialising in Art History [4] in Lausanne (Switzerland), where his family used to live.

In his articles, Lupis frequently writes about human rights violations in Asia, from the death camps in North Korea and the Chinese Laogai, to the Chinese atrocities in Tibet, interviewing many dissidents like Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar.[5], reporting on the turnover to China of the Hong Kong and Macao ex-colonies, the dramatic SARS epidemic in China[6] and the subsequent SARS conspiracy theory, for more than 5 years as a foreign correspondent in the Far East, based in Hong Kong for the weekly magazines Panorama and L'Espresso and for thee newspaper Corriere della Sera (1995-1998) and La Repubblica (2000-2004) and for the Italian State Television RAI (broadcast in Mixer and Format, and in the main news (Tg2 and Tg3)[7]. He also works for the Italian all-news channel, Rainews 24 [8] and as a correspondent for the Telegiornale della Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana, RTSI[9].

As War correspondent, he worked frequently in the war zones, covering the last decades most important conflicts: from the Kosovo War to the massacres following the declaration of independence in East Timor; he was embedded to the United States Army, corresponding on the United States war activity on board of the American aircraft carrier, Uss Roosevelt, in the Mediterranean sea to support NATO's Operation Allied Force. Theodore Roosevelt and CVW-8 aircraft conducted air strikes for two months over the skies of Kosovo against the Serbians.

As photojournalist, he has mainly published his pictures joint to his articles[10]. Travelling for his job, he visited more than 70 countries, including Antarctica in 2001, following a Russian scientific expedition, reaching Port Lockroy, the British Antarctic base on Goudier Island (64º49’S, 63º29’W)[11].

Genealogist

From the beginning of the Eighty's Lupis has spent a lot of time working and researching in the domain of genealogy and family history, as a reputee member of Collegio Araldico in Rome (since April 30, 1989, Accademia Araldica Nobiliare Italiana in Florence, Istituto del Sacro Romano Impero (since May 15, 1989) and as Honorary Member of Colegio Heráldico Antoniano de Lisboa (since Oct. 13th, 2008),Instituto Heraldico de Buenos Aires (since Dec. 12th, 2008) and Academia Nacional de Heráldica de Colombia (since Dec. 18th, 2008).

Since 2005 is the president of Libro d'Oro della Nobiltà Mediterranea - Gotha of the Mediterranean Nobility hosted by Società Genealogica Italiana - Italian Genealogical Society.

In 2014 he was elected General Secretary of Associazione Storia della Nobiltà Italiana (ASNI)

Lupis works and lives between Italy[12] and Hong Kong.
