Mobile Big Band Society is a Sec. 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, founded in 2009 by a group of area citizens devoted to continuing the music of the American swing bands of the 20th century, a genre that all but disappeared with the death of Bob Schultz and the retirement of Paul Filben, the last of the area big-band leaders. The Society is governed by a volunteer Board and engages its own band, also know as “the Mobile Big Band” or “the Mobile Big Band Society.” Band members, some 18 in number, plus vocalists, sound technician and equipment manager, are engaged by the Society through a music director, and paid by the Society. As a public charity, the work of the Society is funded by donations, grants and fees for band performances.

The Society band is composed of seasoned musicians, with many holding college degrees in music. Several also play in other ensembles, have military band experience, or teach music.

The Society accepts pay for band performances for private events and provides the band without charge for selected local civic and charitable occasions.

The Society band plays regularly once a month, eight times a year, at a local restaurant, and holds an annual dinner-dance open to the public. It also conducts “The Jazz Studio” program in Mobile for area high school and other students ready for more advance ensemble and improvisational training, with faculty of band musicians and others.
