It was founded on December 19, 2012. Apart from software development, the company also specializes in language localisation for video games and software. Modoka develops and publishes mainly mobile games, but has also released games on Microsoft Windows and OS X. They are best known for their game Saddies: Attack!! HistoryFoundation and growth (2012–2014)On 19 December 2012, Modoka was founded (as Lumodokate Game Studios) by Moroccan-Dutch indie game and Homebrew game developer Fouad Foumo, who created small Homebrew games for mostly portable devices like the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. Modoka started out as a hub and blog for the Homebrew games and freeware, where visitors could download these games for free. Since these games were free, the decision was made to establish a game development studio, in an effort to recreate their previous Homebrew games as mobile games, and re-release classic MS-DOS games for mobile devices in order to make a profit. Since then the only income was from advertisements through AdSense.[1] Multiple Homebrew game projects gained attention through various websites like the French video game blog GamerGen. These freeware projects racked up more than 100,000 downloads. The Homebrew games mainly consisted of video game clones or tribute remakes of retro games. These games were released freely through most Homebrew game websites like GBATemp and Dashhacks. These Homebrew games are still available but supported through the company’s Homebrew gaming blog: MASTER Homebrew. With the decline in interest in the Homebrew scene, Modoka looked for ways to port their projects to more popular platforms at the time. Their first ported project was a Homebrew application for the PlayStation Portable, named Webtastic. Webtastic was ported to Android and available on the Amazon Appstore for Android but has not been supported since.[2] More Homebrew projects were planned to follow, and the company also started publishing casual games. The first project that was published by Modoka (back then still known as Lumodokate Games) is a tile-matching puzzle video game game for Android and Kindle Fire developed by Bosnian-Herzegovinian indie game developer Neon Drawing Studios named BubbleXRush. After that release, American game designer Adam Ryder collaborated with Modoka and went on the release multiple projects under the Modoka banner. Rebranding, expansion and partnerships (2014-present)In 2014, Modoka transitioned into a more traditional online distributor and publishing studio, which resulted in branching away from their Homebrew gaming origin. This transition also resulted in a name change, domain change and new company logo. The company changed their name to Modoka due to a preference for a shorter name. The name change did not affect the video games released under the previous company name, and the company page on Amazon Appstore and Google Play changed in the following days into Modoka Studios Entertainment. Alongside the rebranding, Modoka launched a publishing division named Modoka Studios Publishing. Modoka Studios Publishing was created to assist small indie games and independent game developers. Through Modoka Studios Publishing, third-party developers can pitch their projects. Modoka Studios Publishing provides additional marketing, translation and localization in the Benelux. Modoka reached in 2015 multiple agreements with various independent game developers to publish their Android mobile games. In subsequent months after those agreements, a port to Kindle Fire devices appeared in the Amazon Appstore. One of these collaborations is with Bulgarian game developer Imperia Online Ltd, and Modoka was planned to publish their video game Imperia Online for MIUI devices. Their first major title Attack!! was announced around the same time for Android, Amazon Fire TV, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation Vita. In March 2016, Modoka released a statement that the original release date of Saddies: Attack!! on Q4 2016 won't be possible due to development process with the PlayStation Vita and Fire TV versions of the game. A few weeks later Modoka announced different release dates for the Windows version and mobile version, with the PlayStation Vita and Fire TV versions to be determined.[3][4] Saddies: Attack!! released on Microsoft Windows exclusively through GamersGate as a free game for new registered users on January 2017 after being delayed. Alongside Volvo – The Game (developed by Sector3 Studios), Saddies: Attack!! is one of the few free video games on GamersGate. A mobile version of the video game appeared on the Google Play store six months later for Android phones.[5][6] The mobile version of Saddies: Attack!! released on June 4 on Google Play.[7] Shortly after the Google Play release of Saddies: Attack!!, Modoka announced that their second project in 2017 was a new mobile game, named Projectile Guardian. Projectile Guardian was released August 20 on Google Play for Android devices.[8] In October 2017, Modoka and National Breast Cancer Foundation collaborated for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2017 with their Power Up Against Breast Cancer! campaign. During this campaign Social media pages of Modoka turned "pink" in order to raise awareness for breast cancer. Special updates were released for Modoka games and fans could donate to the cause through a fundraiser set up with the National Breast Cancer Foundation.[9] Modoka published their video game Saddies: Attack!! and Projectile Guardian for Xiaomi devices on the MI App Store. These games were released in mainland China in September 2018. During this release, Modoka also announced that the company is planning to release Saddies: Attack!! on the Oppo AppStore for Oppo devices.[10] Games
