HistoryThe band was established in 2011 in Budapest, Hungary.[1]. Their music involves traditional blues, ´beat music´ and early British Blues style from the ´60s, country, jug and some elements of pop music, occasionaly with jazzy flavor. The band usually plays as a trio[2]. They frequently use traditional instruments less known in Hungary like diddley bow, stompbox, extra harmonica, ukulele, washboard, kazoo and special harmonicas like harmonetta or polyphonia, through their unique sounds is given mostly by utilizing harmony vocals. Mojo WorKings play often in famous and popular blues pubs in Budapest, the capital of Hungary as well as in blues festivals and clubs all over the country. Countries worth mentioning where they already attended different festivals and concerts are Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Slovakia[3] and France[4] Mojo WorKings represented Hungary on 6th European Blues Challenge in Torrita di Siena,[5] Italy, in April 2016. The name of the band is supposedly a reference to both Muddy Waters´ song "I Got My Mojo Working" and a talisman in the voodoo cult. Members
The trio also plays with Csaba PENGŐ (upright bass) and István MEZŐFI "Fifi" (drums) occasionally. The most experienced member of the band, Tamás SZABÓ has played an important role in Hungarian blues music and in popularization of harp playing in the country more than 30 years now. His previous bands were: Palermo Boogie Gang, Spo-Dee-O-Dee, Silence and Largo Cammino. He participated at Hohner Harmonica World Championship in 1993, and received 5th place in outstanding performance category. He received Hungarian Prizes like Emerton in 1993 and Artisjus in 2009. He shared the stage with Hungarian and internationally known blues bands and musicians such as Champion Jack Dupree, Louisiana Red, Otis Grand, Hubert Sumlin Chicago All Stars Band, Erik Trauner, Blues Wire, Terry Evans, Ripoff Raskolnikov, Larry Garner, Big Jay McNelly, Big Joe Turner Memorial Band, Michael Pewny, Little G. Weevil, Tim Lothar,[6] Homesick Mac, Monty Waters, Franko Toro, Ronald Abrams, Charlie Slavik, Shemekia Copeland, Eby Davis, Big Daddy Wilson, etc. Also, being a session musician, his harmonica playing can be heard on many Hungarian pop/rock/jazz records.
