Montanna McAvoy (born 21 July 2000) is an Australian middle distance runner[2] who has also represented Football Queensland at a junior level four times[1]. She grew up on a sugarcane and banana plantation in the rural area of Daradgee, Queensland[3], before boarding at Ipswich Girls' Grammar School as a senior high school student. She currently attends the Queensland University of Technology, studying business[1]. McAvoy names Emma Coburn as the biggest influence on her running career [1].

Junior Career

McAvoy became passionate for running from a primary school age, when she participated in pre-class morning running. She first joined Little Athletics at the age of six [1] and made her first state championships at the age of ten [3]. She first became national youth champion in the Under 18 3000 metres at the 2017 Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney, Australia in a time of 9.14.67 [4]. This performance saw her qualify for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau, Bahamas in the 3000 metres where she placed fifth overall. The following year, McAvoy won gold in both the 3000m Steeplechase and the 5000 metres at the 2018 Australian Under 20 Athletic Championships in Sydney, Australia [5]. From these results she gained qualification for the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland in both events, however a schedule clash meant she could only participate in the steeplechase [6]. In her heat she finished second to Celliphine Chespol in a personal best time of 9.59.67, to automatically qualify for the final. She finished thirteenth in the final [2].

Senior Career

McAvoy has competed in many open women's events [7], her most notable achievements being winning the 5000 metres event at both the 2016 [8] and 2017 [9] Bridge to Brisbane. She competed in the open women's 3000m Steeplechase event at the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships, finishing ninth [10]

She received many offers of scholarship from the American college system after her graduation from Ipswich Girl's Grammar. She has since accepted at Oklahoma State University.
