Morocco Desert Challenge

The Morocco Desert Challenge (named Libya Rally until 2017) is an annual desert rally (also called rally-raid) in Morocco. In recent years the race always departed from the Atlantic coastal city of Agadir, to end in Saïdia on the Mediterranean Sea via a south-east movement. The competition starts with a technical and administrative inspection in Agadir, followed by a prologue on the beach 'Plage Blanche', about 200 kilometers south of Agadir. In seven stages (between 300 and 400 kilometers) participants compete along the Algerian border to northern Morocco.

The race differs from other rally-raids in that there are no liasons or connection stages. The start of each stage starts at the finish of the previous stage. The participants sleep in a desert bivouac, built by the organization.

History

The first edition of the Morocco Desert Challenge took place in March 2008 in Libya under the name 'Libya Rally'. Some fifty pilots took part. The second edition in 2009 attracted more than a hundred participants from 6 different countries. Due to the political unrest the rally moved to Tunisia, where the number of participants had increased to 160. Due to the Arab Spring, the Tunisian edition of 2011 was postponed to 2012. Only in 2013 the competition got its final location in Morocco, now under the name ' Libya Rally goes Morocco '.

The edition of 2015, with start in Fes and arrival in Marrakech, reached the 400 participants. Thanks to the arrival of rally toppers such as the Dutchmen Tim Coronel and Martin van den Brink, the race got more and more international allure. The edition was shaken during stage 4 by the natural death of the Belgian motorcyclist Steve Vandenberghe.

In 2016, a completely female rally team was also seen for the first time. The Dutch Onna-Onna took care of this scoop in the international rally sport. For the first time, the competition also departed from the Atlantic coastal city of Agadir that year. She ended after seven stages on the Mediterranean, which made the desert rally a 'coast to coast' rally. This concept will continue to be used by the organization from now on.

In 2017 the organization decided to stay in Morocco for good and adapted the name to Morocco Desert Challenge.

The 2018 edition attracted 700 participants from 24 countries, including international professionals such as Elisabete Jacinto, Martin van den Brink, Jacky Loomans, Tomas Ourednicek and Aleš Loprais. The Czech driver Ourednicek, winner of the Morocco Desert Challenge 2017 in the car category, crashed heavily in the prologue and had to stop the race. Belgian rally legend Jacky Loomans talked openly about his incurable cancer during the competition in a report of the Belgian sports program Sportweekend. [1]

The 2019 edition will start again from Agadir on April 12, but will first travel through Western Sahara. The contest ends on April 20 in Saïdia.

For years, the Morocco Desert Challenge has been known as the biggest rally-raid on the African continent, and the biggest truck race in the world. But in 2019, the organisation claims for the first time to have passed Dakar Rally in total number of participants, thus being the largest rally-raid in the world overall.

The participating categories are: motorcycles, quads, SSVs, 4x4 and trucks.

The competition is organized by the Belgian Gert Duson.
