  1. History

      Theft

Moviebox was a type of home-based video player that was produced specifically for rental at video stores.

It was easy to operate and could only be used for playback.

A Moviebox enabled those who did not own their own video recorder to rent video clips and helped to revolutionize the video industry.

Such a machine could usually be rented for around 50 kroner a day in Norway in the 1980s.

It was launched in 1983 by Esselte Video in Sweden.

It did not get any particular prevalence in Norway before 1985.

Most of the machines were VHS.

Esselte Moviebox had its heyday in the second half of the 1980s and early 1990s.

Towards the end of the 1980s, the sale of video players became so widespread that it gradually made the machine redundant, but it was still to be rented in the late 1990s.

The machine has since become something that many associate with the 1980s.

In 2011, video bases Jimmy Joccumsen provided his latest Moviebox to the Norwegian Technical Museum.

History

Norwegian-born Jimmy Joccumsen is considered one of the authors of Moviebox.

He was the newly appointed head of Esselte Video Norway in 1981 and saw it as his task to make the rental available to as many as possible

At that time, few households had a video machine, so he and some colleagues introduced the idea of buying video players to all households in Scandinavia.

When they realized that the idea was financially impossible, they came to the thought of producing simple and cheap machines that could be used for short-term rental.

These machines should be used exclusively to watch video programs, without the ability to record.

On a trip to Japan, the Scandinavians in Esselte received contact with a manufacturer who said willing to make the machine. The requirement was that it should be very user-friendly and robust.

Therefore, the machine itself was attached to the bottom of a shockproof plastic case that could be opened when used.

In 1983, Moviebox was launched and the video distributors had a turnover of 200 million kroner that year.

In 1984, turnover was 400 million and in 1985 it was one billion.

In 1985, half of the 20 million video films were performed in Norway by the customer hiring a Moviebox.

At the most, Esselte had 35,000 players in the various video stores.

Only when the prices of VHS players began to decline towards the late 1980s, the need to hire players began to decline.

Theft

Moviebox quickly became a favorite target for thieves.

This helped Esselte launch an anti-theft machine with Esselte Moviebox Pro.

That is, it became useless after the end of the rental period.

Rental shop reactivated time lock in front of each new rental.
