Origins and History

MSU was established from the foundation of all the existing Myanmar student societies registered under British universities in 2016. The need for a unified student body was recognized by the founding members and the creation of MSU was spearheaded by the founding committee which comprised of students from the existing Myanmar student societies across the UK. Most members of the founding committee were then elected as members of the 1st Executive Committee of MSU.[3] Even prior to its first election, the efforts of the founding committee has led MSU to be officially recognized by Myanmar students in the UK, other official student bodies and the Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. MSU is also known to be one of the first official nationwide Myanmar student organisations abroad in the contemporary history of Myanmar. [4]

Purpose

MSU has established on the following primary aims:

  • To represent Myanmar student community in the UK and the Republic of Ireland
  • To connect and support Myanmar student community in the UK and the Republic of Ireland
  • To promote the image and awareness of Myanmar in the UK and the Republic of Ireland
  • To prepare Myanmar students studying in the UK and the Republic of Ireland for future professional careers.[1]

Within its core foundation, MSU has instilled the following basic principles within the organisation:

  • Enhancing democracy as well as meritocracy within the Union;
  • Entitling equal rights and opportunities to members regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, political belief, religion, or status unless otherwise stated in the Constitution;
  • Refraining affiliation to any political party.[5]

Membership

There are three types of membership of MSU:

  • Full Membership is granted to the citizens of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar who are currently registered as a student at any recognized higher/further educational institutions within the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. This is the only membership category eligible to vote and stand for the Union's Executive Committee elections.
  • Alumni Membership is granted to the citizens of Myanmar who have graduated from any recognized higher/further educational institutions within the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
  • Associate Membership is granted to the persons that the Executive Committee deems it necessary to fulfill the aims of the Union.[6] [5]

Activities

The activities of MSU range from conferences, forums to fun fairs. The first-ever event of MSU was the inaugural "Myanmar Food and Culture Fair" hosted in April 2017 as a celebration of Burmese New Year (Thingyan). This event is continued as an annual event. The mentorship programme is also run by MSU which is a form buddy programme matching current students to freshers. MSU also collaborates with students' unions based in Myanmar to launch a series of events in Myanmar during the summer holidays. The events are mostly aimed to promote professional development activities for its members, as well as the wider Myanmar student population. Other activities of MSU include UK and Irish education consultation for prospective students, panel discussions on relevant topics, career fairs, buddy scheme, knowledge-sharing sessions and providing support to the other student organisations. MSU empowers and provides assistance to the formation of Myanmar student societies at the universities in the UK and Ireland. Notably, MSU has also assisted in the formation of Myanmar Students' Union - USA in 2018 by providing technical assistance and conducting its first election as a third-party.[4] [7]

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is responsible for leading and operating the activities of the Union. Executive Committee is led by the President. Elections for Executive Committee positions are conducted every November of each academic year. All full members of MSU are eligible to stand for the positions of the Executive Committee.
