Personal Life

As a woman breaking into a man's profession, Nancy Copley (Born: 1928), in the mid 20th century encountered a lot of friction—from no ladies restroom at Pratt, where she was the only female student in her class, to architectural firms that refused to hire women, or would only assign them menial tasks. “You have to keep fighting the guys to prevent them from giving you some stupid job,” she said at the time.[1]

Married to Russel Oliver [2] She said in an interview that “this is a serious problem in architecture and men and their egos and to find that to be married to a man that you just work so closely together there is just no ego, and no pressure of an ego, that you can imagine in ‘84 that my ceiling and everything fell down on me. But i was able to keep going, I had one carpenter and two helpers. They would never ask me a question about what we were doing, they would ask their boss what was going on, this is the male ego in the construction business.”[3]

She and her husband worked together, using plywood forms, scaffolds, cement, steel cables, pulleys, an eye bolt and a tractor—but he died in 1984, before the tower was complete.[4]

Nancy Copley passed away in 2013 at the age of 85.
