Naomi Perlov[1] (born August 13, 1959) is a Benesh Movement Notation choreologist, modern dance teacher, assistant and rehearsals director for French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, founder and artistic director, with Offir Dagan, of the Maslool Professional Dance Program, Tel Aviv-Jaffa; founder and artistic director, with Sharon Rubinov Biderman, of Dconstruction - a Methodical Course for Dance Teachers.

Biography

Naomi Perlov was born in 1959 in Rehovot, Israel, to English teacher Mira Weinfeld (1933 Krakow, Poland) and to cinema director, documentarist and Israel Prize Laureate for Cinema David Perlov (1930-2003 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Naomi has a twin sister, Yael Perlov, a film editor and producer, recipient of the 2001 Ophir Award. Naomi  is married to Naftali (Tully) Chen - a  production sound mixer and musician, with whom she has two daughters, Nadia and Lia Perlov-Chen.

Naomi began her artistic career as a musician, playing trumpet and clarinet. At the age of 14 she decided to forsake music for dance and began studying at the Bat Dor Studio in Tel-Aviv – a dance school directed by Jeanette Ordman with the support of Baroness Bat-Sheva de Rothschild. At the Bat Dor Studio she received professional training in classical ballet and gained professional experience in four outstanding techniques of modern dance:  Graham, Cunningham, Horton and Limon techniques taught by teachers from Israel and abroad, including: Milton Myers and Viola Farber.

Naomi joined the IDF in 1979 and served as a social workers' assistant in the Ministry of Defense at the IDF Rehabilitation Department. Upon concluding her military service, she danced for a year in the Batsheva 2 company, under the artistic direction of choreographer Paul Sanasardo.

In 1980 she decided to travel to the United States and Europe with the aim of learning additional techniques. After six months in New York she left for Paris where she lived for 8 years.

During her first two years she studied and taught at the Schola Cantorum de Paris– a school with prominent graduates including the choreographer Angelin Preljocaj.

In 1983 Naomi moved to London to study Rudolf Benesh's movement notation, at the Benesh Institute of Choreology for two years and graduated with Honors.

Rehearsal Director

In order to obtain her choreologist's certificate, Naomi had to go through an internship upon completion of her studies. Naomi was assigned to work with the Groupe de Recherche Chorégraphique de l'Opéra de Paris .[2] Following her very successful internship, and upon its conclusion, Naomi was called to join Régine Chopinot's company as an assistant and choreologist. Régine Chopinot was the most prominent choreographer in France at the time and worked extensively with fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. Naomi worked alongside Chopinot for about 4 years until 1988 and participated in the company's international tour

In 1988 Naomi Perlov was invited to serve as choreologist, assistant and rehearsal director for Albanian-French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj.

Naomi worked with Preljocaj in France for about a year until 1989. At that time, Preljocaj created his canonical work based on Igor Stravinsky's Noces, which portrayed wedding ceremonies in the Balkan traditions. While this score was still being written, Naomi decided to return to Israel to get married and raise a family. The close artistic relationship between Naomi and Preljocaj brought her back to work with him in France and Israel. Perlov and Preljocaj are working together to this day. Naomi is often commissioned to recreate his works in opera houses, dance companies and schools around the world : Paris Opera, La Scala-Milano, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Marinsky Ballet Saint Petersburg, New York City Ballet, NDT The Hague, Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen, Royal Swedish Ballet Stockholm, Opera di Roma.

Artistic Director

In 1993 Naomi was commissioned to serve as rehearsal director for the Batsheva Ensemble and from 1994-1998 she served as artistic director for the ensemble together with Ohad Naharin. Naomi toured with the Ensemble in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

During her time as artistic director, she launched and curated Video Dance - a first of its kind project in Israel, which constituted the making of Video Dance films of the Ensemble's dancers once a year, in collaboration with the leading cinema schools in Israel. Following this project, she was offered to lead a similar project in 1998 at the Paris Conservatory (CNSMDP)  where she decided that the films would be inspired by French poets of the twentieth century. Between 1997 and 1999, she co-directed a Video-Dance project for teenagers, as part of the Matan Arts & Culture Project For Youth course in Givat Haviva, Israel.

From 1999 to 2006, she served as artistic director for the biannual Shades in Dance contest for young Israeli artists at the Suzanne Dellal Center.

In 2008, she established The Maslool - Professional Dance Program, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, and after a year she offered Offir Dagan to manage it with her. The Maslool is a professional dance program located at Bikurey Ha'Itim Arts Center in Tel Aviv. The Maslool has been endorsed and supported by the Israeli Ministry of Culture since 2010.

The program aims to integrate people classified as outstanding dancers by the IDF in the world of professional dance in Israel and abroad. In this intensive 2 years studies, dancers are given the opportunity to work with the best teachers and choreographers, and to perform in about 40 shows per year.

In conjunction with her work as artistic director, rehearsal director and judge in dance contests, Naomi teaches modern dance and trains dancers in many courses and workshops.

As of 2004, she teaches at the Kibbutzim college of education[3], and the arts College for a B.Ed. in modern dance degree.

In 2015, together with Sharon Rubinov Biderman, she established Dconstruction - A Methodological Course for Dance Teachers which provides methodological tools for formulating lesson plans and annual curriculums, provides knowledge in the provision and implementation of corrections, encourages studying musical content, expands the knowledge on movement mechanisms (body weight and gravity) and emphasizes the artistic aspects of rehearsal directing.
