Brown was born in Orange County, California.[3] In a Q&A with readers, Brown stated she began writing stories and poems at age 11, and started trying to write novels at age 15.[4] Brown was inspired to write because she wanted to “create a contagious kind of beauty.”[4] She earned a bachelor's degree in literature from the University of California at San Diego, and master's degrees in English and Native American studies from Montana State University in Bozeman.[3]

The Lovebird

The Lovebird is a coming-of-age novel about a character named Margie Fitzgerald who faces legal troubles after becoming an animal rights activist; Margie then travels to a hiding place on the reservation of the Crow Tribe in Montana.[1][5] Brown has said loneliness and loss are themes in the novel, and the singular “lovebird” of the title points to those themes.[4]The Lovebird is written in English but also features two other languages: Latin and Apsáalooke, the Crow tribal language.[4][5] Brown said she incorporated these other languages in the book because Latin is related to relics and lost things, while the still-flourishing Crow language is related to vitality and the "continuation of life in spite of loss and heartbreak,” and these are all themes in the book.[4][6]

Critical reception of The Lovebird

In its review of The Lovebird, BookPage stated, “[M]aking you feel for and believe in her characters and care about what happens to them—these are signs of real talent. Natalie Brown is a real talent.”[7] Booklist observed, “In vibrant, colorful language that leaps off the page, Brown paints her winsome heroine’s coming-of-age with compassion and affection in this lush, compelling tale.”[8][1] Publisher's Weekly noted, “Brown is able to get readers empathizing with [Margie Fitzgerald] during bouts of loneliness as well as caught up in her passion for what she believes is the right thing to do.”[9] Kirkus reviewed the book unfavorably, saying “Brown is no Louise Erdrich.”[10] The Lovebird was a 2013 Montana Book Award Honor Book.[2]

New name: Rose DeMaris

According to a website dedicated to her copywriting service, Brown now publishes her creative work under the name Rose DeMaris.[11] The official Rose DeMaris website attributes The Lovebird to DeMaris, noting it was published under the name Natalie Brown.[12] As Rose DeMaris, she has contributed pieces to online literary magazine The Millions[13], Montana-based magazine Big Sky Journal[14][15], and Everything Golden[16]. The first appearance of the name Rose DeMaris was in April 2016, when she published a memoir of author and poet Jim Harrison on The Millions website[17]. The short biography that accompanies her articles at The Millions states that DeMaris has been working on two new novels: an imaginative chronicle of the life of Saint Anne set in 1940s Los Angeles, and a collection of interwoven stories set in an otherworldly town.[17]

Personal life

According to an interview with Bozeman Magazine, Brown resides in Montana. “I tend to be a bit of a hermit,” she said, “and I relish quiet, and love animals and nature, and walking outside. All those things coalesce for me here in Montana. It’s been a very nurturing place for me as a writer.”[18]
