The NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) was formed out of the NATO Research and Technology Organization (RTO) and NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC) in 2012. It is governed by the NATO Science and Technology Board (STB).

Its staff consists of three NATO executive bodies: the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) located at NATO HQ in Brussels, the Collaboration Support Office (CSO) located in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France and the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) located in La Spezia, Italy.

NATO Chief Scientist

The NATO Chief Scientist is a voluntary national contribution to NATO. The post was formed with the formation of the STO in 2012. The NATO Chief Scientist has three roles as: Chairman of the STB, Science and Technology Advisor to Senior Leaders and Head of the Office of the Chief Scientist.

The first NATO Chief Scientist from 2012 to 2016 was MGen Albert Husniaux, Belgian Army. The current NATO Chief Scientist is Dr Thomas H. Killion, USA Senior Executive Service.
