Naturist fiction is a genre of fiction writing in which the practice of naturism is an important aspect of the story. A general definition holds that naturist fiction can be any narrative "in which non-sexual nudity is present, such as in a social nudity context like Naturist centers, clothing-optional beaches, etc..." [1]. A definition that is less specific regarding setting, but more precise as far as form and content, gives naturist fiction as "novels, novellas, or short stories, of most any genre, in which an integral aspect of the plot is the adaptation of one or more characters to social nudism in a context supportive of naturism."[2] Usually, this means that characters overcome fears or misconceptions to progress toward body acceptance and social nudity. Many examples of naturist fiction are speculative (science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction), while others are more realistic, and either kind may take the form of comics or graphic novels. An autobiographical account of naturist experiences, or a naturist memoir, is considered non-fiction and thus not an example of naturist fiction. The naturist fiction genre is beneficial not only to naturists who want to read about new or imagined contexts for social nudity, but also for non-naturists who may be curious about naturism and its relation to body acceptance, health, spirituality, or any number of further topics. Potentially, "the contexts and stories presented through naturist fiction can be engaging to the point of helping convince readers to take the step to explore social nudism in their own lives."[3] Naturist magazines such as Nude & Natural and H&E Naturist regularly review naturist fiction among other kinds of books related to naturism.
