Nepali Hill Dog or Black Hill Dog is a breed of dog native to the country of Nepal.[1] Nepali Hill dog is also known as Kala Pahari Kukur in the local language Nepali. These dogs are usually found in the hills and are black in color. Thus, the name Kala (black in Nepali) Pahari (hill) Kukur (dog in Nepali). [2] This breed of dog is another native dog originating in Nepal, the other being the Himalayan Sheepdog. [3]This breed of dog is not recognized by any major kennel club. [4] DescriptionNepali Hill Dogs are black in color and has long black furry coat along with brown patches on their head and eyes. These dogs are usually more furry and bigger then the free-ranging dogs of Nepal, with males being much larger and stronger then females. Male Nepali Hill dogs can be as much as 50% larger in size then it's female counterpart.[5] In ancient times, this dog was used for herding sheep and protecting livestock by Nepalis. It is a medium to large sized dog with a bushy tail carried low. [6] Nepali Hill dog also known as Nepali Black Hill Watchdog is also related to the dog breed Shakhi of Tibet. This dog although a watch dog is also known as a good deer-hunting and wild boar hunting dog.[7]The characteristic feature of this dog is it's black color, and can be easily identified as all of these dogs are black in color with black coat and rarely a very few has a slightly tan, brown, or yellow shades on their feet and stomach.[8] DistributionThis dog originated in Nepal, mostly in the hilly areas.
