The New Works Festival is a theater festival for playwrights, lyricists, composers, and theater goers. The festival is renowned for incubating new plays and musicals.[1] It is hosted every summer in Palo Alto, California by TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.

History

The New Works Festival was inaugurated in 2002.[2] The Tony Award winning musical Memphis was incubated at New Works in its first year.[3][4]

The creative team of Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen developed and presented their musical The Burnt Part Boys at the New Works Festival in 2006[5], and began work on the Tony-nominated musical Tuck Everlasting at a Theatreworks writers' retreat in 2010.[6]

Format

The festival has been noted for its interactive approach that puts audience members in dialogue with playwrights, and invites authors to rewrite their works in between performances in response to audience comments and panel discussions.[7]
