Nextmune AB, or the Nextmune Group, is a global specialty companion animal health company. It has a particular focus on allergy diagnostic and treatment for pets.^[1] The company was established through the combination of five separate businesses: ArtuVet (the Netherlands), Alergovet (Spain), Oystershell Animal Health (Belgium), Spectrum Veterinary (USA) and Dr. Baddaky (Norway).^[2]

Allergy in companion animals

Allergy is a condition of hypersensitivity to substances which are common and harmless to most animals - approximately ~15% dogs are allergic^[6] and there is anecdotal evidence that prevalence is increasing^[7]. The hypersensitivity is caused by a dysfunction in the pet’s immune system. The substances that cause allergy – allergens – include pollens, mites, molds, dander, insects, fibers and foods.

The most common symptoms include itching, scratching and redness. Consequences of scratching, licking and rubbing on the coat and skin, such as crusts and hair loss, are frequent. Respiratory symptoms (like asthma) are common, especially, among cats and horses. Rhinitis, ocular (watery eyes and swelling around the eyes) and gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea and increased flatulence) are also common. Ear infections are also a common secondary condition.^[8]

Nextmune allergy diagnostics

To determine if a pet is allergic a thorough physical examination is performed. Before an allergy diagnosis can be established all other causes for the pet’s symptoms have to be ruled out. Once other triggers of the symptoms are ruled out, allergy testing is a common next step.^[9]

Nextmune supplies allergy tests that help veterinarians to identify allergic triggers. The tests also help in the development of allergy treatment plans for the patients. Nextmune offers two kinds of allergy tests: a serum (blood) test and a skin test. While skin tests have historically been most common, serum (blood) tests are currently the most common diagnostic tool used by general practitioners due to its ease of use, high sensitivity and specificity. Veterinarians take a blood sample, a few milliliters, from the patient (pet) and sends the sample to a diagnostic laboratory. The serum analysis (diagnostic test) is commonly performed within a few days and the results are sent to the veterinarian.

Nextmune allergy treatment

Allergy is a chronic and progressive disease, which means that without treatment of the underlying immune dysregulation, allergies will get worse year after year. Allergy requires continuous hands-on management throughout the life of the pet.^[10]

There are a number of efficacious tools today to fight allergies - the majority are symptomatic (alleviating the symptoms produced by allergy). Allergy immunotherapy addresses the root cause, not only the symptoms. Immunotherapy keeps the condition under control ensuring that the symptoms are greatly reduced or eliminated over time. Nextmune offers immunotherapy under several brand names. Immunotherapy works by giving repeated doses of an allergen(s), thereby stimulating an immune response in the body which causes the animal to build up immunological tolerance. The immunotherapy is administrated either through injections (subcutaneous treatment) or through a mouth-spray (sub-lingual treatment). Treatment can be given either at a veterinary clinic or in the home. Immunotherapy commonly requires a prescription from a veterinarian.

Nextmune also offers non-prescription products for both mild and severe allergies such as shampoos, creams, immune system boosters and allergy-neutralizing sprays for indoor use (Allergone).
