Type: Independent Media Organisation Industry: Media Location: Geneva, Switzerland Founded: 2015 Founder: Jean-Christophe Nothias Editor & CEO: Jean-Christophe Nothias Official Website: www.ngoadvisor.net/ HistoryNGO Advisor was founded in 2015 by the former Editor-In-Chief of The Global Journal, Jean-Christophe Nothias. Nothias started to develop the ranking methodology as early as 2009 and published the first two publications of the Top 100 rankings in 2012 and 2013. The interest showed by the non-profit sector in the Top 100 NGO rankings led Nothias to envision and apply a more academic approach as regards scoring, and therefore a less journalistic one. He then took his expertise and the new methodology to a more dedicated platform, which was named NGO Advisor. Since then, rankings have been coined as “the Ivy League of the Non-Profit World” II. Mission and ObjectivesNGO Advisor uses a specially developed scoring methodology to publish its Top 500 NGOs. NGO Advisor’s research and analysis, as led by Nothias, aims to unite academic and journalist practices in order to act as a mirror for non-governmental organisations and to highlight the best innovations and practices in the non-profit sector. Findings of these research and analysis can act as a guidebook for funding donors, volunteers, policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders. In terms of evaluation and ranking, NGO Advisor refers to the NGO as the unit of analysis, rather than intervention-level parameters, which is common in development studies within donor and practitioner community studies. Organisations ranked by NGO Advisor can have different bylaws such as nonprofit, foundation, B-corp, network, alliance, private-public partnership, and for profit, as far as they have an ultimate goal that is not to ultimately distribute financial dividends to their constituency. Criteria for RankingThe three pillars of interest that NGO Advisor focuses on and are crucial in evaluating NGOs for ranking are: (1) impact, (2) innovation, and (3) governance. NGO Advisor scores organisations based on their performance in 165 criterias. The fourth edition of the Top 500 rankings published in 2016 introduced new sub-criteria which was grouped into four main categories: (1) economics and finance; (2) marketing and communications; (3) governance and human resources, and; (4) an overview section, which accounts for the organisation’s history, mission, strategy, operations, among others. This is then applied to each organisation according to the nature of its work. References
