Legendary characters, the New Barons of Fame, also known as the Nine Knights of the Earth, were the most stubborn barons of the Catalan land, with the desire to reconquer the territories occupied by the Saracens. These nine knights were the lords of Cervelló, Erill, Ribelles, Montcada, Cervera, Pinós, Anglesola, Alemany and Mataplana. In some versions the one of Mataplana is Count Arnau.

The nine barons of the legend are;

  • Guerau d'Alamany
  • Bernat d'Anglesola
  • Galceran (o Guerau) de Cervelló
  • Galceran de Cervera
  • Bernat Roger d'Erill
  • Hug de Mataplana (the Count Arnau, or Count l'Arnau to the popular song)
  • Dapifer de Montcada
  • Galceran de Pinós
  • Gispert de Ribelles

The conspiracy

Otger Cataló, the so-called Father of the Fatherland, conjured the Nine Knights to fight until death by the land that had been born to them, until they were released from the power of the "half moon" Saracen, who had imposed on them a culture different from its original faith.

The nine knights joined their swords and swore before the altar of the black Virgin called Our Lady of Montgrony (near Ripoll, at the same time related to another Catalan myth, that of Guifré d'Arrià, Pilós) that They would loyally fulfill their commitment.

Historical bases of the legend

It is believed that the legend was created and propagated by supposed descendants of the New Barons in order to reprimand their natives, since the knights bear the name of important noble families of the Middle Ages.

  • Baronia d'Alamany: There has never been a "Barony of Alamany". Els Alamany are the barons of Cervelló from Alamany Hug de Cervelló (?-1063).
  • Baronia d'Anglesola: Baronia d'Anglesola arose in 1056 when Ramon Berenguer "el Vell" de Barcelona (1024-1076) took the castle of Tàrrega to the Saracens, who gave in 1079 to Berenguer Gombau, the true founder of Casa d'Anglesola.
  • Baronia de Cervelló: the first known Baron de Cervelló existed almost three centuries after the time attributed to Otger Cataló, and neither was Galceran nor Guerau, but Odalric, called. This Odalician is a descendant of Count Arnau (supposed uncle of Otger Cataló).
  • Barony of Cervera: Cervera remained in power Saragossa until 1067. Hug Dalmau (1067-1095) commanded the Catalan troops to the siege of Cervera and occupied the square. Ramon Berenguer I annexed the county to the county of Osona and constituted the Barony of Cervera, which gave way to Hug Dalmau, called since then Hug Dalmau de Cervera.
  • Baronia d'Erill: Erill's first baron, known as Ató d'Erill (? -977). In the modern age they became counts.
  • Baronia de Mataplana: the founder of the first House of Mataplana that we know (House of Berga-Mataplana) was called Hug de Mataplana, but it was born three centuries after the time in which Otger Cataló was supposed to have lived. The castle of Mataplana is documented from 1076.
  • Baronia de Montcada: The supposedly legendary founder of the Barony of Montcada is called in the legend Dapifer de Montcada or Ramon de Montcada (a "dapifer", at the time of Otger, was a seneschal). According to the myth, he is a son of Otger Cataló: Ramistà (? -768), Count of Limoges and Senescal of Aquitaine, assassinated in 768 by Pipí «el Brief» (714-768), king of the francs from 751 up to his death. According to the singers of the deed, he accompanied his father Otger and his son Arnau in 752 campaigns against the Saracens in Septimania, and died in the siege of Narbona, but not in battle, but the victim of fevers (surely it is one confusion with the circumstances of his father's death). The reality is that from 767 to 768 he entered war against Pipi, king of the Franks, but was defeated, captured and beheaded. His first-born son was Arnau, (? -813) count of Empúries from 795 until his death, the first baron of Rocabertí and the first baron of Montcada.
  • Baronia de Pinós: the first Pinós was Mir Riculf de Pinós (? -1068). His son Galceran de Pinós (1068-1117) moved his headquarters to the castle of Bagà.

Cinema

In the year 2017, the film Pàtria was released, which tells the story of Otger Cataló and the New Barons of Fame.
