Nora Herting (born 1978) is an author,[1] keynote speaker and visual strategist.[2] She is recognized for elevating the practice of graphic facilitation as the CEO and co-founder of ImageThink.[3][4]

Herting and ImageThink have been featured in Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Fox Business and Inc.[5][6] Her book Draw Your Big Idea was published in 2016 by Chronicle. She is a frequent speaker on visual leadership, strategic design and creativity.[7][8]

Herting has visualized the talks of many of the world's thought leaders including Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Tony Blair, Al Gore, Tim Berners Lee, and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.[9][10]

Visual Strategy & ImageThink

Herting began her career as a Design Thinking Strategist and graphic facilitator while working for Capgemini in their Accelerated Solutions Environment in 2006.

Cofounding ImageThink in 2009, she's built it to a full service firm specializing in visual strategy, graphic recording and graphic facilitation.

ImageThink is based in Brooklyn and San Francisco with 14 full-time employees and services over 300 live engagements a year.  ImageThink’s client list includes Google, IBM, United Nations, NASA, Ogilvy, Nike, Twitter.[11][12]

Herting has spoken about the power of visual leadership and creativity at  SXSW Interactive, Atlantic What’s Next, Massachusettes Womens Conference and Oredev in Sweden and to private executive teams at Google, Twitter, Cisco and the Aspen Institute.[13]

She has been a visiting professor at Denison University, a guest lecturer and instructor at The New School, Columbia University, RISD, Baruch College, Parsons School of Design and Google Creative Academy.[14][15][16][17]

Artistic Practice

Herting has explored the contemporary social constructs of photography. She has received several awards and residencies and has exhibited internationally.[18]

In Free Sitting, Herting went undercover as a photographer at a JcPenny portrait studio in 2004. Working just as much as a cultural anthropologist, as an artist, she created her own photographs of customers while examining the social customs of portraiture.[19]

In 2007 Herting was the recipient of a mutual grant by the Getty foundation and the Brooklyn Historical Society.  The resulting work, 281 portraits can now be found In the Nora Herting  “Face of Brooklyn” Collection at the Brooklyn Historical Society. The collection is 281 portraits of Brooklyn residents, taken at 8 parks across the borough.[20]

In 2013 Herting was awarded a residency at Les Halles Le Havre, France through the Triangle Arts association.[21] The resulting photographic work, vertical landscapes, was was exhibited in  Talle Humane at the Museum of modern art André Malraux Le Havre, France.[22]

In Faces of Falun, a reinterpretation of her earlier work based in Brooklyn, Herting created portraits of residence of Falun, Sweden in 2018. The resulting series was exhibited at Dalarna Museum in conjunction with the Gallerie Se Konst’s art festival Sammankomsten.[23]

Biography

Herting graduated Summa Cum Laude Bachelors of Fine Arts, Photography University of New Mexico, where she studied with Adrianne Salinger, Patrick Nagatani and Geoffery Batchen.[24]

Herting received her MFA in Photography at The Ohio State University, where she worked as the graduate assistant to Ann Hamilton.[25]

She currently lives in Brooklyn New York.
