Norene Leddy is an American new media artist, known mostly for her work involving human rights with LGBTQ youth, sex workers, and young women. She earned her BFA from Boston University in 1994 and a Master of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design – The New School in 2000[1]. She is currently a part-time professor of Fine Arts, Foundation, and Space at The New School. Her work is primarily focused on sex workers safety and exploring high and low technology for protection and self-expression[2]. She’s had residencies at Eyebeam[3] and Gallery Aferro[4].

The Aphrodite Project

The Platform

The Aphrodite Project started was started in 2001 by Leddy. She had a fellowship at Cypress where she did extensive research on the Greek Goddess. It was believed that every sex worker was a disciple or priestess who worshiped Aphrodite. These disciples would walk the streets in leather shoes that had nails on the bottom to spell out “follow me”[5]. This gave Leddy the idea to make an updated version of these shoes for modern day sex workers. She wanted to create a shoe that was similar to the “follow me” sandals but also address real problems that everyday sex workers face. Leddy spoke with people from that community and took what they said into consideration when making the Platform. Mainly girl’s spoke negatively about concealed weapons such as small knives or pepper sprays because often the attacker could gain a hold of the weapon and use it against them. Sex workers also explained the importance of flashy and eye-catching outfits to attract clients[5]. So, she built a platform shoe that contains a small led screen, to promote business. The screens can be personalized to have a contact number scroll across or flashy lights and images to attract a customer’s attention. The platforms also serve as protective gear. Instead of a place to contain a small weapon there is a built-in alarm system and tracking device to ensure the safety of the wearer. When first designed Leddy created them with laser cutters and other higher end gadgets but during her residency with Gallery Aferro in 2007[4], she worked on creating a DIY version of the Platform to make it more accessible to the people who would be using it. On her website she features photos of all models created, as well as a page dedicated to showing the step by step process of making your own platform shoe, as well as a DIY alarm purse[6]. This project works towards exploring female sexuality though the complex mythologies of Aphrodite.

Kestos Imas

Kestos Imas is part of The Aphrodite Project. It is based off the magical object worn by Aphrodite herself. It was said to have given her the powers to seduce any god or human of any gender. Kestos Imas has been translated to “magic girdle, corset, belt, or saltire”[7]. The Aphrodite Project team thusly created 3 customizable versions of these items. The Kestos Imas (Belt) and Kestos Imas (Saltire) can communicate private information to clients or other sex workers via LED lights. These lights range from subtle flashes to more eye-catching displays. All the lights and timing can be customized, i.e. the flashes can be used as Morse code and can be quickly turned on and off. A small tri-colored LED on the back can be used for discreet safety communication. For example a worker could signal to other’s that they are talking to a bad date, an undercover cop, or a problem client[7]. The Kestos Imas (Girdle) contains to speakers in the back that can be hooked up to an ipod or mp3 to play music. Each garment has numerous pockets so the worker does not have to carry a purse that could get stolen. And each contains a GPS system that can send coordinates of your location to any number you specify.

Reworking The Map

This portion of The Aphrodite Project is dedicated to creating a map of the real life stories of sex workers in the Bronx. It was commissioned  by the Longwood Arts Gallery/Bronx Council on the Arts. The goal is to eliminate negative stereotypes about sex workers in the area[8]

SexEd

Norene Leddy is the co-director of SexEd. She works alongside Liz Slagus, founder and director, and a sexual health advisory board that includes Caitlin Hansen, Kerstin Pahl, Cory Silverberg, and Bryana Williams[2]. “SexEd aims to raise sex education from the trenches, into the streets and eventually the schools...”[2]. The organization was started due to the lack of sexual education and misinformation led by opinion rather than fact. By using community collaborations, workshops, exhibitions, and publications of curriculum they hope to bring sex education to the youth and young adults across the US. Using framework from earlier activism, SexEd, has and will “...create projects, commission work, grant residencies, and fund publications and community collaborations to develop sex education projects and curricula that are art-inspired and community based...”[2].

SexEd worked with The New School and Parsons, alongside Planned Parenthood NY, to build interactive devices for informing people ages 11-25 about PPNY and it’s services[9]. They gave students the correct information on birth control, STI prevention, gender, healthy relationships, consent, and rape culture to provide them all with a medically accurate, inclusive, and consent based start to their collaborative project. Students came up with a game titled Come Play with Us: Flash It!. The game is similar to Heads Up, one player holds a card with words and hand drawn pictures and another gives them clues as to what the card is. The cards contained information about Planned Parenthood, as well as medically accurate definitions. The game was adaptable, so different cards could be used for different ages[9].

Themes

Norene Leddy follows a general theme of education. In works such as The Aphrodite Project, she explores sex work and brings attention to the women in the industry who are often looked passed. She strived to educate not only herself but those in surrounding communities she works in. Her work in SexEd also works to educate people in the US.

Sexuality is another theme in Leddy’s work. Not only are the pieces she created for The Aphrodite Project a safety device for the people wearing them, but also a revamped design of what sex workers were wearing in ancient Greece. She explores the ideas of safety alongside sexuality. In SexEd she continues to promote safety and sexuality. The goal is to educate young people, in order for them to be able to protect themselves in sexual situations. {{AFC submission|t||ts=20190329021814|u=RHadley96|ns=118|demo=}}
