Northeast Ohio Rocks!

Northeast Ohio Rocks! is a part of the painted rock movement that moved across the United States. Started in July 2016, Northeast Ohio Rocks! [https://www.cbsnews.com/news/a-more-perfect-union-rock-painting-ohio/ received national attention] in February 2017 on CBS This Morning. By the Spring/Summer of 2017, the painted rock movement[1] had exploded across the United States. The group paints rocks and hides rocks as random acts of kindness to unexpectedly brighten someone's day. Northeast Ohio Rocks! "is spreading acts of kindness throughout Ohio and beyond".[2] Their painted rocks have been found in every single state and around the World. The group estimates they have painted and hidden 6 million painted rocks.

How Northeast Ohio Rocks! started

Northeast Ohio Rocks! was created by Nancy Powell Pierson inspired by groups in Washington State where her son and daughter in law were living.[3]

Rock Painting Groups

Rock painters and hiders participate primarily in Facebook Groups named after their city, county or popular region followed by the word "rocks". These are community based groups. The members paint and hide rocks in their communities to brighten a stranger's day. Painters post picture's of their painted rocks to inspire other members to paint rocks. Finders post pictures of their found rocks to share their smiles and excitement. Traveling painted rocks can be followed if the painter has used a hashtag. The hope is the finder has been inspired to become a painter/hider too. Traveling rocks inspired people in other communities to paint rocks and hide rocks too.


Follow the Rock Painting Movement

Port Angeles Rocks

The very first community based "rocks" group was created by Aisha Lesh in Port Angeles, Washington. Port Angeles Rocks[4] begin in January 2016. Aisha's children collected rocks on family walks. Aisha thought it would be fun to paint and hide them.[5] Port Angeles Rocks inspired people in other communities to start rock painting groups.


Whidbey Island Rocks

The Darnell family in Oak Harbor, Washington were inpsired by Port Angeles Rocks and created Whidbey Island Rocks in June 2016.[6] Oak Harbor, Washington is home to Naval Air Station Whidey Island. Many rocks have traveled across Whidbey Island and across the United States with traveling service member and visiting family. One such family, Eric and Mallory Powell of Ohio. Eric Powell was stationed at Oak Harbor, Washington. While deployed to Afghanistan, Eric's wife joined Whidbey Island Rocks. Mallory suggested to her mother-in-law that a rock painting group was needed in Northeast Ohio.


Northeast Ohio Rocks

Northeast Ohio Rocks! was created by Nancy Powell Pierson in July 2016. The group quickly reached 50,000 members. Rocks were being found in foreign countries.[7] Northeast Ohio Rocks! continued to grow to the largest rock painting community in the World.[8] Northeast Ohio Rocks! painted rocks have been found in all 50 states creating inspiration and a rock painting movement.
