North Shields Baptist Church is a church in North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England, which is part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Northern Baptist Association.

History

Formation

The church began meeting 1798.[1] The first minister, Robert Imeary, had been travelling to London with the intention of joining a missionary society when he stopped en route in Newcastle. Being persuaded there by the theological understanding of the Baptist church, he accepted an invitation to form a church alongside a number of members of the Newcastle church that lived in North Shields.

By 1844, the church was the largest in the Northern Baptist Association with 205 members. This had increased to 238 members by 1851.[1] Ten years later, it had almost 300 in its membership.[1]

In 1973, however, the church's finances had declined such that it was unable to pay for a minister or pay for necessary repairs to the building. The minister of nearby Whitley Bay Baptist Church agreed to act as moderator during this time of vacancy.

Building

The church's premises, on Howard Street, near the retail centre of the town, were first established in 1846.[1] The chapel was designed by noted local architect John Dobson. By the early 1970s, however, the building was suffering from woodrot and was in such a poor state of repair that the congregation was exploring its sale and the decision to meet elsewhere. Some improvement in their financial circumstances allowed remedial work to be undertaken and the building was retained. The hall, to the rear of the premises, was demolished and rebuilt, being opened in 1979. A redecoration of the rest of the building was completed in the next two years.

A significant redevelopment of the building was undertaken in the late 1990s, soon after the appointment of the present minister Elisabeth Edwards. The building was, by then, again suffering from woodrot and was also damp. Despite having few wage earners in the congregation at the time, a substantial amount towards the work was raised from within. Grants received from various funding bodies made up the balance of the costs.

More recently, the building's toilet facilities have been refurbished, particularly in light of the regular use of the space for community-focused activities.[2]
