  • Nowgam village is one among the beautiful villages of Banihal surrounded by mountains on all sides and lush green forests .The village is habitated by ample amount of population owning to its moderate type of climate. The village is accessible through NHA1 which runs in middle of the village And remains connected to the other parts of the Tehsil throughout the year except few snowy winter days .The village consists of 4 physical divisions which includes two other villages and 2 helmets namely Khairkoot ,Danar,sangrinar and tangiwar respectively. Most of the peoples of the village speaks pure kashmiri however the adjoining parts (hamlets) speaks Gojri language .

  • About Nowgam : Nowgam is a Village in Banihal Block in Ramban District of Jammu & Kashmir State, India. It is located 29 KM towards North from District head quarters Ramban. 92 KM from State capital Srinagar, Jammu . Pin code is 182146 and postal head office is Banihal . Nowgam is surrounded by Ramsoo Block towards South , Shahabad Block towards North , Pahloo Block towards North , Ramban Block towards South . Anantnag , Udhampur , Rajauri , Srinagar are the near by Cities to Nowgam. This Place is in the border of the Ramban District and Anantnag District. Anantnag District Shahabad is North towards this place.
  • Etymology: The word Nowgam is believed to be derived from the kashmiri word "نو" and " گٲݥ" which means new villages (newly formed village) .
  • Geography and climate : The village is engulfed between the lofty mountains of the pir panjal range of Himalayas ,and it is situated about 1675m above the mean sea level .Several beautiful streams and rivulets pass through the village which add beauty to the village one hand and the source of irrigation for the cultivation of crops on the other. These perennial streams provide fresh water to the village throughout the year.The peoples of the village cultivates several crops like Rice,wheat,corn, vegetables like knol khol purple,capsicum,Fresh beans ,peas,cabbage,,etc.
  • The village has moderate type of climate,sunny summer days and few harsh winter days.The Gujjars and Bakarwals are important part of the village.Some Gujjars are residing permanently in the outskirts of the village however some Gujjars and Bakrwals commence in the village during the month of the may with their flocks which consists of Goats,cows,sheep, and Buffalos,They feed them in the meadows and pastures locally called Margs and Dhoks. They oscillate their rewards till the commencement of winter .And add beauty to the village with hustle and bustle from the top of the the mountains to the bottom of the village.The peoples of the village speak the dialect of the kashmiri language .However the adjoining parts of the village namely sangrinar and tanginar speaks Gojri language .
  • Demographics of the village : The village has ample amount of population .According to the sources the village contribute approximately 2100 population to the population of the state .The Sex ratio is good and literacy rate is also increasing from the last few years .The source of income to the peoples of the village is mainly agricultural activities followed by allied activities .The establishment of Navyuga four-lane project has generated various employment positions for the villagers .

  • Shaitani Nallah : It is located about 3 kms from the village and is known for its scenic beauty and transit of yatris .The yatri organizers provide their lunger service to the yatris who visit from different parts of the country for the purpose of pilligrimage .The place is fascinated with old fashioned Tea Dhabas which provide tea and other services to the yatris as well as passer byes.
  • Jawhar Tunnel: Jawahar Tunnel or Banihal Tunnel is a road tunnel in Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Named after the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, it was constructed for round-the-year surface transport between 1954 and 1956. The Jawahar tunnel has been operational since 22 December 1956. The length of tunnel is 2.85 km (1.77 mi), with highest elevation of 2,800 m (9,200 ft). It has one lane road in either direction. It is situated between Banihāl and Qazigundon NH 1A that has been renumbered NH 44. The tunnel facilitates round-the-year road connectivity between Srinagar and Jammu. The tunnel was renovated by the Border Roads Organization under the project BEACON in 1960. It was designed for 150 vehicles per day in each direction but the number of vehicles is now 7,000 in both directions. After renovation, the tunnel now has a two-way ventilation system, pollution & temperature sensors, lighting system and with emergency phones for any assistance installed from Border Roads Organization.
  • Banihal-Qazigund tunnel:Banihal Qazigund Road Tunnel is an 8.5 km road tunnel at elevation of 1,790 m in the Pir Panjal range in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir connecting Banihal and Qazigund. It is a double tube tunnel consisting of two parallel tunnels - one for each direction of travel. Each tunnel is 7 m wide and has two lanes of road. The two tunnels are interconnected by a passage every 500 m for maintenance and emergency evacuation. The tunnel will have forced ventilation for extracting smoke and stale air and infusing fresh air. It will have state of the art monitoring and control systems for security. It is expected that vehicles will have to pay a toll to use the tunnel.
