Origins

In 1964, a theatre was built on the site of the University of Southampton campus, for the

people of Southampton. This theatre was supported by the Nuffield Foundation. The

theatre was built by Sir Basil Spence, OM RA and was officially opened by Dame Sybil

Thorndike on 2 March 1964.

In 1978, NST submitted its first application for Arts Council Funding.

On 1 November 1982, the theatre became an independent producing theatre, funded by

Arts Council England, Southampton City Council, the University of Southampton and

Hampshire County Council.

In 1996, NST Campus underwent a refurbishment.

The theatre produced its own original productions as well as hosting touring productions.

Alongside the John Hansard Gallery and Turner Sims Concert Hall it became part of ‘Arts at

the University of Southampton’.

presented the world premiere of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox, which won The Renee

Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre at the UK Theatre Awards 2017.

Brenton’s play The Shadow Factory. This play looked at the forgotten history of

Southampton during World War Two, and was revived due to popular demand in 2019.

huge street party for the local community. the street party included performances by

Zoielogic, local choirs and the community was invited into the building for further

celebrations.
