{{expand Turkish}}{{edu-bio-stub}}Nuriye Gülmen (born 1981) is a Turkish academic and activist, whose actions sparked the Yüksel Resistance Movement. Until October of 2016, she taught comparative literature at Selçuk University in Konya, Turkey. During the purges which followed the 2016 Turkish coup d'etat attempt, she was fired from her position. In response, she began to protest by sitting in front of the Human Rights Monument on Yüksel Street in Ankara.[1] Two weeks later, she was joined in her sit-in by Semih Özakça, a primary school teacher who had been similarly fired from his job. After being detained and released by the police dozens of times, they began a hunger strike on March 9, 2017.[2] [3][4] On the 76th day of their hunger strike, police raided their homes and arrested them.[5] [6] [7] [8] [9][10] They are being held in Sincan Prison, an F-Type prison for political prisoners.[11] CNN International included Nuriye Gülmen in a list of "8 Leading Women (and One Girl) of 2016."[12] Education and careerNuriye Gülmen studied comparative literature at Eskişehir Osmangazi University. She then attended graduate school at Bilkent University. After finishing her graduate studies, she obtained an academic position at Selçuk University through the ÖYP (Öğretim Üyesi Yetiştirme Programı), a faculty training program sponsored by the Turkish Council of Higher Education. Just prior to her removal from her job, she was assigned to move to Osmangazi University; however, because of her participation in the Gezi Park demonstrations, her transfer was blocked. She was fired from her position at Selçuk University by Statutory Decree #679.}[13] Political activitiesNuriye Gülmen's protest message has been "I want my job back," and she has listed the following reasons for her protest:[14] [15] [16]
