In 2008, she visited coconut farmers in Koh Maisee Island, Thailand, during her vacation. Then, she found that air pollution was caused by burning a massive amount of coconut shells as well as that coconut farmers were hired under bad working conditions. This experience made her long for solving these problems. With inspiration of alleviating poverty in farmer community and reducing greenhouse emissions, she founded KOKOBOARD, a social enterprise which makes construction materials from natural substances such as coconut shells or rice straw bought from farmers. [1] Life, education and careerEarly life and educationSinamonvech was born in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1972. She became aware of air pollution when farmers set fire to their post-harvest fields, in her childhood. While studying at Burapha University, she visited farmers due to a program which aims to support farmers, and was greatly shocked at farmers’ poverty. After her graduation, she had belonged to a NGO which supports farmer community for 2 years. Then she studied abroad at California College of the Arts, and learned English and graphic design there. Starting a business and business descriptionSinamonvech came back to Thailand and worked for a television station in 1997. In 2008, when she visited Koh Maisee Island on a trip, she was shocked that coconut farmers worked for a low salary. In addition, she was aware that burning an enormous amount of coconut shells caused air pollution. In Thailand, coconut shells, rice straw and other such agricultural waste is disposed of by incineration. It leads to CO2 emissions up to 27 million tons a year. She started thinking of how to make good use of the waste and researched materials. [2] She came up with an idea that changing agricultural residues to agricultural byproducts can create more income for farmers and reduce air pollution at the same time. In 2009, she started KOKOBOARD, which makes particle boards from post-harvest resources. In 2011, severe floods occurred during the monsoon season in Thailand, so that KOKOBOARD’s factory was seriously damaged. However, she never gave up and reconstructed a factory. After that, she has started PIECEFULL, an original brand of small products made from natural substances, since 2016.
