oDoc is a telehealth platform developed by Sri Lankan company oDoc (Private) Limited, headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka. oDoc launched their services on the 17th of September 2017. oDoc is an app that connects doctors and patients for video consultations over a smartphone.

oDoc allows its users to channel & video consult SLMC registered doctors, to get advice, a prescription (if medically required), and to get medicine delivered.^[1] oDoc is meant to be used for non emergency medical that conditions that do not require a physical consultation ^[2], which according to the American Medical Association make up over 75% of doctor consultations. ^[3]

oDoc boasts having over 300 partner healthcare providers, and over 15,000 patients as of October 2018.^[4]

History

oDoc was founded in 2016 by Heshan Fernando, Sohan Dharmarajah, Inshard Naizer, and Dr. Janaka Wickramasinghe.^[5] What set oDoc apart from other telemedicine startups at the outset was that its founders looked at the problem they were trying to solve from a design perspective, rather than a medical one.^[6]

The oDoc team started its fundraising efforts in early 2017, resulting in them raising US$1 Million, the largest seed investment round for any startup in Sri Lanka.^[6] The initial investors included Ajit Gunewardene (ex Deputy Chairman of John Keells Holdings, Chairman of PickMe), Phoenix Ventures (the investment arm of Sri Lankan apparel company Brandix), and [https://www.lolc.com/about LOLC].

Business Model

Users can choose to subscribe for a monthly fee, gaining unlimited access to General Practitioners and Specialists.^[8] Alternatively, a user can opt for a pay-as-you-go model, where the price of a per-use consultation is determined largely by how much a doctor decides to charge. ^[9]

oDoc also offers corporate subscriptions, ^[10] which tie in with other employer provided health benefits. oDoc has been rolled out to over 15 prominent corporates operating in Sri Lanka including MAS Holdings, Brandix, and AIA. These subscriptions are targeted towards reducing productivity loss due to personal illness or familial illness.^[1]

Recently oDoc has partnered with a number of Sri Lankan pharmacies, allowing walk in customers a means of getting a valid prescription on the spot if medically required.^[11]

Consultations & Prescriptions

Users are able to set up video, audio or text consultations with oDoc's GPs and Specialists. oDoc is meant to be used for common, non-emergency medical conditions such a fever or a rash.^[6] oDoc can also be used for checkups on chronic conditions, mental health, and sexual health issues.^[12]

Doctors can issue prescriptions instantly if medically required, through the oDoc app.^[1]

Medication Delivery

A user that is prescribed medicine on oDoc can get their medicine delivered through the oDoc app.^[1]
