The first series from Off the Menu, Celeb Bites, features OTM founder Lawrence Longo and celeb-friends' (Shay Mitchell, Mikey Roe, Charlotte McKinney) quest for the ultimate secret menu items. The new app from Off the Menu has accumulated a curated list of secret food and drink menu items from over 2,000 restaurants, cafés, and bars across 50+ cities. Originally launched as a mobile app that shared their off the menu items from a roster of kitchens including fast food chains and four-star fine dining, Off the Menu is now taking these secrets to the new small screen to share their insider knowledge in an innovative, expansive platform, like no other on the scene. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/off-the-menu-relaunches-app-and-debuts-original-digital-content-with-newly-appointed-creative-director-actress-shay-mitchell-300332561.html Hands down, the coolest part about being an “insider” is the perks. Toronto native Lawrence Longo realized this quickly when he moved to Los Angeles 14 years ago and noticed all of his friends ordered off the menu. (COPY TO LL) So he started making notes, collecting his friends’ off-menu orders and their origins. For the next seven years. “And this was before cellphones,” Longo adds. “I was writing those secret menu items down on paper in pen.” Before he knew it, he had a list of more than 200 and decided to shop the idea around to Hollywood. The concept was bought, but when a TV show didn't pan out, Longo decided to turn his database of knowledge into an app. available for android and iPhone She teamed up with best friend Lawrence Longo to launch Off the Menu, which gives members insider tips on seven different exclusive menu items from seven different restaurants each week. For a fee of $20 a month, you can redeem each spot's meal, free of charge. And to make the deal even better? The duo made sure to give back to the get go, by teaming up with No Kid Hungry to donate one meal a day to a kid in need and help eradicate child hunger in the U.S. she stresses that she's a part of Off the Menu primarily for the love of what the app can do — oh, and for the love of food itself, too. She talked to Teen Vogue about how she and Lawrence got the idea for the app in the first place, and how they scout new restaurants to showcase. (It's a tough job, but hey, someone's gotta do it.) And while the app is only available for Los Angeles restaurants right now, the duo are planning on changing that. The future — and your phone — never looked so delicious. __Shay Mitchell: I've known Lawrence for quite a while actually. We're both from Toronto. I didn't know him when I lived there, but he's one of the first people who I met when I moved out to L.A. through mutual friends. And we kind off got along because he was a nice person, but secondly because of our mutual love of food. So over the years we would always go out to eat together, and then the past... I don't know, I want to say two, three years, we kind of would have these talks about places he knew that would have a special dish that would be off the menu that I wouldn't know of. He would take me to a place and be like, "You have to try this dish." And I would search for it on the menu, and he said, "No it's not on the menu, it's off the menu." And I'd be like, "Oh, you've got a special connection. You're trying to one up me." Then I would take him to a place and I would say, "Oh, well this is a really good dish they used to have on their menu, but they don't, but they still make it for me because I know about it."So we would continue to one up one another with that Eventually he was like, "You know, I want to start an app where I can tell people the different off-the-menu items from the restaurants based on the cities." So we started Off the Menu just as a basic app like that, and it would tell you places that have a different item off the menu. Then about six months ago, a year ago, we were talking about an Off the Menu club. He's like, "You know, clubs you feel included, you're in the know." I'm literally giving you every single detail, but we would talk it back and forth to know what Off the Menu club is: $20 a month, you're invited through email. And every single day, seven days a week, there's a different off-the-menu item from certain restaurants. And you can literally walk in to the restaurant, show them your phone, and redeem the dish that they are showcasing for that week. So it's pretty awesome. And not only that, but every time, whether you use it or not, every single day, a meal is going to No Kid Hungry, which is super important. We actually have team members that go around L.A., and they try a lot of great food, but it's a fun thing for not only the members, but also the restaurant owners and the chefs because they get to try out something new. Or they'll bring back a popular dish and see it how it does. Or the chef will even create something completely new, which is fun for them. So if you can try a new dish, try a new restaurant out, and give a meal to a child, that's pretty awesome all for $20 a month. .https://www.teenvogue.com/story/shay-mitchell-off-the-menu-app-you-tv-show/amp A publicist for the app tells Eater that Off the Menu — which is available for Android and iOS — "unveils a list of secret menu items at restaurants, bars, and cafes across major cities in the U.S. and Canada." The app covers chains like Chipotle and, of course, In-N-Out, as well as high-end establishments like Los Angeles' Spago Beverly Hills, New York City's Gramercy Tavern, and San Francisco's A16. The app currently has guides for 16 cities and plans to expand to more locations after it officially launches next month. https://www.eater.com/2015/8/11/9132577/off-the-menu-app-secret-menus Introducing Off the Menu, a new free smartphone app, available for download on iTunes and Android that will keep you in the loop concerning the secret cool stuff you could order at Chipotle, In N’ Out, Shake Shack, and more. Lawrence Longo, the app's CEO and co-founder, is a self-described foodie who spent years compiling a list of secret menu items from restaurants all across the United States. The app has a subscription fee of $20 per month, which lets you access new dishes every Sunday. A portion of your subscription also goes to feeding hungry children, so you get to feel good while you're chowing down, too. https://mashable.com/2017/08/19/off-the-menu-club-app/#7tfoS7V36Oq0 As a result of that goal, Off the Menu now donates one meal a day for every subscriber who joins the app, with retail brand UNDEFEATED now matching their donations. This issue is one Lawrence and his team are passionate about. Off the Menu is an app that is mainly intended to give foodies a chance to taste secret menu items from some of the most exciting restaurants in Los Angeles. But, on top of that, each subscription on the app also feeds one child in need a day. https://medium.com/the-future-of-food/tap-an-app-for-social-good-4d2c6bfc6bfd Eight years later, Longo found himself with a list of about 200 deliciously secret eats, ranging from high-end restaurants to fast food. “I wasn’t sure what to do with it other than impress colleagues, friends, and dates.” He sold his pitch for an “Off The Menu” TV show, but realized this was something he needed to take charge of himself. He knew the perfect platform for this closely guarded information was an app. Users of the app aren’t the only ones excited about it, restaurants are equally happy. “It allows their customers to feel special. It gives chefs something new to create.” The app is so simple you could even sneak a peek on a date. Tap on one of the 28 cities you happen to find yourself dining in and scroll through until you find the restaurant. There you'll find a description of the secret item as well as price and tips for ordering it. https://www.themanual.com/food-and-drink/the-secret-of-ordering-off-the-menu/amp/ Shay Mitchell poses with Off the Menu Founder & CEO Lawrence Longo at the Los Angeles Time Food Bowl Secret Burger Competition presented by Off The Menu and Postmates on Saturday (May 26) in Beverly Hills, Calif.
