One Boston Day is an annual holiday which takes place on April 15th every year in Boston, Massachusetts. The event was created on April 15, 2015, exactly two years after the Boston Marathon Bombings, which claimed the lives of four civilians.[1] One Boston Day encourages people to conduct random acts of kindness, and to help others out. It is also a day to honor Boston's resilience, generosity, and strength when bouncing back from the 2013 bombings. [2]

{{AFC comment|1=May be better off being merged with Boston Marathon bombings or Patriots' Day Bkissin (talk) 21:12, 7 March 2019 (UTC)}}{{AFC comment|I agree Bkissin, I think this is definitely better suited for the Boston Marathon Bombings topic so I added it there as a sub-heading (which will hopefully go through alright). For anyone who might come here to review, I think this should be declined? Unless it looks valid enough to stand on its own. Sorry I'm still knew to this website so I'm not really sure how to delete this or remove it from the draft list Raleigh theodore sakers (talk) 2:58, 8 March 2019 (UTC)}}

History

Leading up to the two year anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombings, Mayor Marty Walsh wanted to inspire Bostonian citizens to help people in need, and to overall raise positivity and morale throughout the city. As such, he coined the holiday, "One Boston Day"; which would take place on April 15, 2015. On the birth of the holiday, and exactly one week after bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was charged with over 30 charges in connection to the bombing incident in Boston,[3] celebrations took place throughout the city, and people, as well as organizations and businesses, took initiative in lending a helping hand. The Hyatt Regency collected 502 pairs of shoes to donate to the St. Francis Homeless Shelter, the Museum of Science opened up their Butterfly Garden exhibit for free, the Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross held a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheraton, Legal Sea Foods delivered free meals to firefighters around Fenway, Boston Calling pledged to donate a quarter of the ticket proceeds in its music festival to the One Fund charity in honor of the bombing victims, and radio station 100.7 cleaned up Filippello Park, the sight of one of the standoffs that took place between police forces and the Tsarnaev brothers in Watertown, Massachusetts.[4]

In 2016, Marty Walsh established "One Boston Day" as an official, annual holiday in the city of Boston, and the state of Massachusetts. The official goal set for the holiday is to encourage random acts of kindness around the city.[5] Walsh encouraged citizens to spread around a hashtag for One Boston Day (#OneBostonDay) to bring a wider range of awareness and attention to the positive message behind it. On April 15, 2016, places like the Museum of Fine Arts and the Sports Museum at TD Garden offered free admission to anyone interested, the Boston Ballet Nutcracker Bear gave hugs to people in Copley Square, restaurants used their proceeds to donate to the Greater Boston Food Bank, Martin Richard Foundation and Boston Marathon Bombing survivors, offered free Duck Tourrides to military families and veterans, and the Boston Public Library set up a donation center to help out the with the poor water situation in Flint, Michigan.[6]

In 2017, the city of Boston encouraged citizens to discuss what they were going to do to honor One Boston Day on social media, using the hashtag, #OneBostonDay. Some of the events held around the included bringing infant necessities to the Royal Sonesta in Boston, bringing an extra pair of socks to Franklin Park Zoo, donating blood, thanking a veteran for their service, splitting a pizza with a first responder.[7]

In 2018, One Boston Day celebrated its fourth birthday, which saw the formation of the "Operation Thank a Veteran" program, and several ways to donate to different charities and causes, such as blood drives, the Martin Richard Foundation, and non-profit food service programs throughout Massachusetts.[8]

Reactions and Recognition

Throughout its existence, One Boston Day has attracted national attention. Sports teams like the Red Sox and Bruins tweeted in support of the holiday, as well as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Representative Joe Kennedy III, and former Vice President Joe Biden.[9]

In 2016, One Boston Day was nominated for a Shorty Award for "Social Good Campaign".[10]
