Also, a sentence introducing what the Organ of Corti is would be useful. (When the first sentence uses the pronoun "it" with no antecedent, it is very confusing.) Built between 2010 and 2011, it toured London and the surrounding countryside, visiting many unique locations. Named after the organ in the inner ear, The Organ of Corti was designed as an experimental instrument that recycles sound from its environment using a series of large plexiglass tubing.[1] The tubes capture sound around it and re-frames it acoustically for the listener. One can walk inside and around the tubing to hear how it changes the sound in the environment. The structure was built to be mobile, so it can be transported to different areas, creating new soundscapes and experiences depending on the environment. For example, a viewer would have a much different experience in the city center of London versus a riverbank. There is an element of chance to the work, as each environment will create a different experience, and since the setting is largely uncontrolled, it is difficult to predict how the structure will interact with the natural sounds and what it will highlight or enhance for the viewer. This ties into a more experimental soundscape aspect of sound design, wherein the environment is uncontrolled but the structure remains as a control or harnessing tool. In Liminal’s statement about the project, they discuss how the piece encourages viewers to “listen to ourselves listen”, a concept that allows one to listen to what is already existing in the space in a new form that recontextualizes the experience. For example, since the structure amplifies different frequencies, you may be able to hear something minute or seemingly insignificant compared to if you were just standing in the same environment. This idea of “rematerializing the concept of sound” can be referenced back to artist John Cage’s 4’33’’ performance piece, where he wrote a score of four minutes of silence.[2] Cage’s piece forced listeners to mindfully listen and be aware of themselves and the space around them in a way that wouldn’t happen without the piece existing, and also occurs in The Organ of Corti.
