Oronzo Persano (San Cassiano (Lecce) 28 July 1944) is an Italian guitarist and composer.[1] BiographyOronzo Persano received a "Certificat du Degrée Superior" (high-level certificate) in Guitar in 1969 at the Conservatoire de Musique de la Broye (http://www.cmbroye.ch) in Payerne, Switzerland, where he studied Guitar and Composition under the guidance of Jacques Huber. While there, Persano was named "Best Student of the Year" by Roger Volet, director of "Radio Suisse Romande". Persano attended more specialized guitar classes with Alirio Diaz in Alessandria, Italy, and he won a scholarship for bassoon studies with Carlo Giuffreda at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In his professional music career, Persano performs as a soloist and in chamber orchestras [2]. Since 1969, he has taught classical guitar courses at the Università del Tempo Libero (ENAL) in Brindisi and Lecce. Persano participates in conventions and conferences about teaching music in schools and on how to listen to music. In 1975, he founded the Scuola di Chitarra Classica Mauro Giuliani[3][4]; many of its students receive top honors during national and international competitions, and many go on to become instructors at conservatories or primary and secondary schools with music teaching programs.[5][6] In 1978, 1979, and 1980, Persano was the artistic co-director of Concorso Città di Lecce per la diffusione della musica contemporanea (Competition of the City of Lecce for the spread of contemporary music), with Goffredo Petrassi and Franco Donatoni. Since 1982, he has been the guitar professor at the Istituto Musicale Pareggiato ai Conservatori di Stato di Ceglie Messapica [7] in Brindisi. He is also the conservatory's deputy director. Persano's musical compositions are played across Europe and all over the world. StyleThe artistic production of Oronzo Persano is highly linked with the multicultural land he comes from: Salento, in the south of Italy, in the past inhabited by Messapi, Greek, Latin, Byzantine, Norman, Spanish, Arabic, … These roots move towards the research of his artistic identity, made of languages and of new expressive means, extending from Salento to Europe and to the whole world. [8] Persano is conscious of running through unexplored spaces, without deny his past. In his musical composition, space and time adopt an absolute value, in a mixture of ancient values and current views, archaic languages and contemporary lexicons.[9] Discography
Selected worksLa Suite Africana, 1977The ‘African Suite’ (La Suite Africana, 1977) for guitar, about universal mysteries of existence, beyond space and time: life-death-God. The timeless man’s yearning to interact with the Absolute, music and dance as moments of high spirituality. Prefica Salentina, 1978The ‘Prefica Salentina’ (1978) for guitar, the bond of the author with Salento, the land in which he lives and works, the recovery from the memory of this peculiar figure, the ‘Prefica’ a women who use to lament as a profession, who interprets the pain on the stage of life. A compositive structure which underlines the ancient theatrical background in the heartbreaking interpretation of the pain of the others. An avant-garde artistic-musical elaboration also with respect to the graphic choice of horizontal part and graphic signs he used with respective legend by the author, as to underline once again the moments more physical and theatrical of the work. Rugiada Marina, 1999‘Sea Dew’ (Rugiada Marina, 1999), the artistic projection of an observed object, a rosemary bush with drops of dew, and the ‘repercussions’ in psychic and sentimental sphere of extraordinary geometries and wonderful architectures. The notes for two guitars are molded under the form of harmonic agglomerates, in a sort of sonic iridescences, of slight chromatic games in a delicate trickle. Novecento Addio, 1999‘Farewell Twentieth’ (Novecento Addio, 1999) for flute and guitar, is the last greeting to the ‘brief century’ that finishes, ‘his century’, to which he has actively given his new and personal contribution, strongly anchored to his own cultural roots. The man and the artist-educator, in space and time given to him to live and conduct his own ‘mission’, considers his own life as an opportunity of giving to the others. All worksFor Guitar solo
