Common-sex entwinements came with a price. In exchange for purchasing a home within their borders the privilege of documented partnerships previously known only by heterosexuals could be realized, but not yet Federally recognized. How did this help the 40% of homeless youth known to identify as LGBT? Questions on the privilege of power and privilege as they relate to other other segments the LGBT community are being researched by the SGMRO. There is an intersectionality that occurs of environment and stresses faced by the SGM population who are known to move toward urban areas. Negative health impacting factors including air pollution, a higher cost of living and general overcrowding are hard to differentiate from the sexual and gender identity discriminations already challenging this Minority. With coordination through a single office the multitude of research projects on this community covering all areas of life a safeguard against redundancy of scientific efforts allows for better networking between the many experts whose job is to learn more and in doing so hopefully guide our programing to remove the barriers that have created this health disparity. The SGMRO keeps watch for gaps in research and offers support both inside and outside the NIH to study those facets.
