[3][4] PageCarton's backend is written in PHP, uses model–view–controller web application framework approach, uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques and software design patterns, stores data in a XML-based flat-file database with support for MySQL and similar databases, and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds and search.[5] PageCarton was released on Jan 24, 2011, by its founder, Ayoola Falola [6]. The software was formally named Vanity Web, then it's name changed to "Ayoola Framework" before being rebranded as "PageCarton" in 2014 [7]. PageCarton is a registered trademark of Ayoola Falola, the founder of PageCarton; the trademark is registered in the United States in "Web site development software" class[8]. Ayoola Falola, a cyber-security professional in Nigeria [9] claimed he decided to create PageCarton because he was unsatisfied with the current vulnerabilites of most of other web frameworks, so PageCarton was said to be build to focus on security of data and resources hosted on the web. [3] To function, PageCarton has to be installed on a web server, like Apache or Nginx. A local computer may be used to publish locally before being exported to a LIVE server.[10] OverviewPageCarton is notable for being the first content management system founded in Nigeria. It is an alternative to WordPress made and maintained by mostly Nigerians[7]. On the List of content management systems, none of the project founded from Sub-Saharan Africa is featured. Then, it brings out the question of if technology innovations actually come from Africa. Or is it that African solutions are denied representation on the center stage due to the problem of media suppression. African innovation is not yet getting the level of global recognition and support it truly deserves [11]. PageCarton is a tool to structure, build and manage web sites and apps. [12] Although PageCarton offers a sophisticated API for developers, basic Web-site installation and administration of the framework require no programming skills. PageCarton runs on any computing platform that supports both a Web server capable of running PHP and a file system to store content and configuration. Its architecture is a front controller, routing all requests for non-static files and directories to a single PHP file which parses the URI and identifies the target page. Every PageCarton website requires at least one theme to be present and every theme should be designed using PageCarton standards without needing to use PHP, only valid HTML and knowledge of embedding in-built PageCarton widgets in HTML codes to add dynamic data into the page .
