Panagis Zissimatos (1948 - ) is a Greek Shipowner

Biography

Panagis Zissimatos is the son of Andreas and Stamatoulas and was born in Kefalonia. Originated from a well-known family in the Greek merchant navy, the Vallianatos family.

The roots of the family's maritime activity date back to the early 19th century, while the whole family has been engaged in shipping two (2) centuries earlier. Founder Andreas Vallianatos (1794-1899) establish a fleet of sailing vessels operating in the trade of the Ionian Islands based on Braila Romania.

Both the sons of Gerasimos Vallianatos (1822-1894) and Dionysis Vallianatos (1820-1890) followed the naval occupation of their father. Gerasimos successfully negotiated his own ship "Agios Nikolaos" between Greece, Malta, Trieste and other Mediterranean ports. Dionysis mainly dealt with the Ionian Islands, while Panagi's son became a shipowner in the southern Danube area. The descendants of Gerasimos, Dimitris Vallianatos (1861-1943) and the son of Luke Vallianatos (1885-1968) continued the family naval tradition. Stamatoula Vallianatou, daughter of Lucas, married Andreas Zissimatos, who later became her father's associate in the shipping business.

Since the end of the 1920s, long-standing relationships have been established with well-known oil companies such as BP Hellas, Shell Hellas, Mobil and Standard Oil, which generally involved oil transport in the Greek and neighboring Mediterranean shipping markets.

Like all his ancestors, Panagis Zissimatos followed the family tradition and entered the sea at a very young age. Already at the age of 14 and at the age of 18 he had already 18 months of seagoing service. He graduated from the Naval School of Oinousses, the most distinguished naval college in Greece and later acquired the master's license, traveling with most types of ships.

As a member of a large Greek shipping family, Panagis Zissimatos had several years of seagoing service as master of various oceanic vessels under Greek and foreign flags and had gained knowledge and personal experience on the capabilities and limitations of various types of ships and the shipping industry in general. Utilizing this knowledge and experience, he expanded his activities in the coming years.

In the late 1970s, the privately-owned fleet consisted of two small tankers transporting oil products to the Greek islands and the Mediterranean Sea in general. Panagis Zissimatos then joined the family business. The directors and shareholders of the family business were the uncles of Gerasimos and Dimitrios Vallianatos.

Panagi Zissimatos, following his own dream, created in the mid-1980s the Adriatic Tankers company, which was active worldwide in the transport of petroleum products, being one of the largest and leading shipping companies that introduced innovations in the transport of petroleum products, until about the mid-1990s before withdrawing from the market.
